whoa. back to more strange bedfellows... steve hackett and rory gallagher. i am a major fan of both. the hackett track is groovy later hackett. he's got that ability to have such beautiful, atmosphere-making gweetar tracks that don't need vocals to sound layered, rich, wonderful. and then we have rory in pared down cranked up blues mode. mwhaha. last of the independents is my fave track on that album, but shadow play is still a worthy track.

so i am torn, i am. i am beset by quandarizing. do i go into luvly hacketty realms and soundscapes? or do i crunch it up and shoot some pool? (cue kath changing her vote seven times.)

today, i go for rory.

First time I've heard that track and it's wonderful and deserves to win this round.

it really is a wonderful track, and i am already feeling flooded by nigh-catholic guilt at not picking it. however, if i had picked it initially, and then you came on here raving about the rory track, i would find myself feeling flooded by nigh-catholic guilt at not picking it.

welcome to nigh-catholic guilt night at chez kath. happily for me, nigh-catholic guilt night lasts for about seventeen seconds, or until i am distracted by much worse vice-ridden things.

Would love to have gone with Rory but that Hackett track is seriously good.

Rory has the edge - The Hackett track is nice 'n' all that, but a bit dry & clinical. Needs a stonking great keyboard solo middle section in D flat minor, and a bit more reverb.

So B.

Same as Crimso - voting against Rory, for me, Zed's middle name, would be sacrilige

But you voted for Tim Buckley who's not prog either? At least Gallagher has been noted many times before in the corner....

The Hackett is OK in a mellow sense but there's not much fish nor flesh to be discerned....whereas Rory DELIVERS!

Not knowing either song, when I saw the match-up I assumed I'd be voting for Steve Hackett. Then I played it and it was new age world music bollocks. And then I played the Rory track and it was utterly uninspired meat and potatoes, nothing about it to interest me at all. So A gets it but only by default.

But it's not Prog, even in the broadest of broad churches!

It's more prog than Rory Gallagher is! But I don't think we have to choose prog songs, just songs to appeal to Prog Corner.

Sorry. My post was complete nonsense. By mistake I refered to A as being Rory and therefore not prog.

The real A, Steve Hackett is as prog as you can get!

Ignore me. It was a long day yesterday, but it's a new day today.....

I was just going to respond, until I read your last post Huw.

I fail to see how Gallagher comes anywhere near being even 'broad church'. It's blues.

The Buckley song isn't really prog as I see it, no. But it has what one might say are prog elements. Just because Gallagher has been mentioned many times in Prog Corner doesn't make him prog, does it?

I like that live version of the Hackett track more than the album version from Guitar Noir. It's no Spectral Mornings but a nice slice of atmospheric Hackett guitar which I don't think he does enough of on his latest albums.

More Rory and more proof that he is just not for me, so an easy win for A

I was sorry not to be able to vote for Shadowplay, a fantastic track by RG. I work the basis of if you don't for you own entry, how can you expect anyone else to.
