I actually had B in my shortlist but opted against it because I felt it was a tad too obvious a choice. But it's a bloody great track all the same. A was terrible. B it is.

a - Shane always sounded fucked to me, and the song is all right, but the Popes aren't the Pogues. 4.5 / 10
b - I'm kind of ambivalent about the Cocteau Twins. As DF says, every time you catch a single track, it tends to be a pleasant ish experience, and I have paid money for some of their EPs, but I never really got a sense of individuality about any of the songs - not helped by the wordless vocals – and over an album length they all sort of collapse together into a puddle of twee, with acoustic strumming on top. Not B's fault, but there's been a lot of this sort of thing in the cup, and I'm a bit burnt out by its indistinguishability. erm 4 /5

Yeah, Shane is over the line, but the Cocteaus, Massive Attack, Portishead, Air, etc. are the face of the fucking thing.
Despair is not quite strong enough a word.

It's not. For Shane "Utter fucking cack" is the very minimum required.

.
And quite rightly so..you'll get beautifully arranged inventive music with them. Who wouldn't prefer that to some shambolic and tired pub rock?

Needed more fiddles.
