B is more my speed. Some good stuff on A and a few mediocrities.

Starting a list with the holocaust of middle class sneering that is "National Express" is a "brave" move.
B, with hindsight, didn't have to do much to overpower its feeble opposition, but it's good.

Not sure what A was thinking with the double dose of Neil Hannon. As it is i prefer darker ballady Divne Comedy to the chirpy stuff like National Express and the Father Ted pick is just pointless. I like Zevon Earle and DEville but B wins for Joni and the ultimate clincher is the terrific Les McCann pick. However B much as I love Little Feat why Oh why pick the safe anodyne Willin' . Lowell is all about grit and dirt. Still

2 lists full of variety - mainly in quality. Look I know old gits like me are supposed to say this sort of thing but the new(er) stuff on these lists (Kellis, Gregory Porter) is exceptionally dull.

A The Divine Comedy & Mink DeVille, what's NOT to like.
You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.

I hate to vote against the mighty Little Feat, but A rules (in spite of picking the wrong Neil Hannon tracks, as has been noted)! That Sammy Salvo single is ace!

Re: BCB CUP 2017 - Round 1 Match 1
List A:
The Divine Comedy - National Express - Sounds like the kickoff song to a Broadway musical I'd like.
Mink DeVille - Spanish Stroll - Sounds like Lou Reed singing one of Zappa's ersatz 50s songs.
Steve Earle - Copperhead Road - I remember this one. I like it more than I did then.
Sandie Shaw - Reviewing the Situation - Great track! She's not as well known in the states. Must explore.
Dazz Band - Let It Whip - Funky thumbs up.
Sammy Salvo - A Mushroom Cloud - Good.
Gregory Porter - Don't Lose Your Steam - This guy's cool! This will go on my 2016 BCB Year By Year
Emily Barker - Nostalgia - The list loses a bit of steam here. But it makes me want to watch the TV show.
Warren Zevon - Lawyers, Guns And Money - My man Warren. A deeper cut would have been welcome.
Neil Hannon - My Lovely Horse - Probably funnier in context. But I never got around to watching Father Ted. And laugh tracks are one of the most annoying things on earth.
List B:
Talk To The People - Les McCann - Too much noodling around on this track for my taste. But I’d like to hear the whole LP.
Jet Fighter - The Three O'Clock - I like how they seem to be lip-syncing to a whole different song. Nice little 80s nugget.
Saved By The Bell - Robin Gibb - Schmaltzy, but affecting. Robin had a great voice, didn’t he?
Jerk Ribs - Kelis - Nice track. I see what the Milkshake is. It would bring me to the yard.
Free Man In Paris - Joni Mitchell - Can’t argue with this.
Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow) - The Monkees - Not one of the stronger Monkees tracks.
Heaven Hammer (Missing) (Air Remix) - Beck - I usually like him, but his tracks are growers. This one hasn’t grown on me yet.
Little Town Flirt - Del Shannon - Nice to hear Del, but he has better tracks.
Willin' - Little Feat - Love that steel guitar.
A Roller Skating Jame Named 'Saturdays' - De La Soul - I need another summer. A Summer of Eric.
A gives me more of what I want to explore.

Yep, same feeling here. Shining lights on A are the Dazz Band and Sammy Salvo in the middle, but B has a strong start and a strong finish.

Re: BCB CUP 2017 - Round 1 Match 1
i think i am feeling rather velvoid on some of this. B has folk on it i love (gibb, the monkees, del, beck, lil feat) but the picks themselves, while going for the less obvious, are fair to pretty good at best. the jet fighters do naught for me, even in an 80s nostalgic sense. clear keepers in les mccann and joni, though.
A started off on the wrong foot for me with the first track, but then it picked up and proved quite an enjoyable listen, from earle through zevon (and the horse really is lovely, even if it isn't a pony anymore).

There's good stuff in both, and some new names to take from either (Sandie Shaw, Sammy Salvo, The Three O'Clock, Kelis). B's a more familiar list overall, but not especially obvious, and I find it the more consistent of the two. B it is!

Top ten Monkees for me. Love it.
Despite the presence of the odious Joni Mitchell, I have to give it to
