My first year, and I learned alot. I was really amazed to make it past the 1st Round (match #4).
List C
Cream - "I'm So Glad"
Flamin' Groovies - "Teenage Head"
Killing Joke - "Love Like Blood"
The Kinks - "Till the End of the Day"
Bill Withers - "Use Me"
The Sonics - "Have Love Will Travel"
The The - "Dogs of Lust"
13th Floor Elevators - "You're Gonna Miss Me"
Neil Young - "Down By the River"
The Stranglers - "Skin Deep"
A - 33
B - 68
C - 75
Going into Round 2, I had two SNAFUs working against me. Firstly, the brain-fart error on the Kinks tune - it was actually a last-minute addition, and it's not a song I've been long aquainted with, but I like it alot. Secondly, the Bill Withers debacle didn't help me.
From everything I read prior to the commencement of the Cup, I decided to play it somewhat safe; play to the audience for the most part (not to say I don't love all those songs). Tried to mix it up with varied decades and styles.
Round 2 additions~
39 Steps - Slip Into the Crowd
Eric B & Rakim - Paid In Full
War - All Day Music
Sebadoh - Not Too Amused
Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance - Debris
I kinda dug deeper, as advised. Another token Canadian content tune, that would hopefully appeal to the punk crowd. Eric B & Rakim, token hip-hop tune. "Debris" was more polarizing than I had predicted. Sebadoh might have been my undoing there.
The list I lost to - whose is it?
Dark Was The Night - Cold Was The Ground - Blind Willie Johnson
Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Led Zeppelin
Rambling Man - Laura Marling
Fuzzy - Grant Lee Buffalo
I Ain't Gonna Cry No More - Timi Yuro
I Turned You On - The Isley Brothers
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Theme From Shaft - Isaac Hayes
I Want You (She's So Heavy) - The Beatles
Little Fluffy Clouds - The Orb
Clear - Cybotron
The Leanover - Life WIthout Buildings
This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us - Sparks
Slow Down - Larry WIlliams
Pleasant Valley Sunday - The Monkees

Re: Cup Wrap-Up
I thought I would play it safe, but it backfired, not least because I insisted on having two (!) Monkees tracks and one obscure Beatles cover, "Besame Mucho". I was severely castigated for that. Next year I'll just go for broke and list anything I damn well please. I'll never win this thing anyway, I'm stuck in a time warp.

Our new champion had this to say when my list was ousted...
Getting a nod of approval from the Modernist means more to me than winning the cup.

Quite. I believe that Geraint will be a wise and just ruler and that this is the dawning of a new age for BCB. An era when we can all stand up proud and tall, a time when boner shall embrace boner warmly and come together, united in joy. All hail Geraint, the biggest boner on the board!
Well said. The Modernist is the boner we should all suck up to.

That's funny - I almost called you a suck-up yesterday.

He's always behind my list. In fact this is what he wrote when I got knocked out this time:

Re: Cup Wrap-Up
I'm sorry to say that after being knocked out early I mostly forgot to vote after that, partly being distracted by the BCB Prog Cup, where I actually knew most of the songs, which was a bonus. Well done for those of you who stuck in there for the 2 months it took from start to finish, and congratulations to The Modernist who in addition to seemingly knowing what people would vote for, seemed to be the most regular and interested commentator.

My list was better than both of the lists that beat it in round 1.
