BCB Cup 2011 Round 4 Tie 5 - Replay - Mental torture
Having to play this by ear at the moment. As things stand we definitely won't be starting round 5 until Sunday now, as two replays are outstanding. The first of these is ready for you to vote on right now, although I'm still waiting for one of the tie 7 contestants to send me five new songs. Or even to open the PM I sent requesting the five songs....
Anyway, here's the first replay. Usual format, and remember A and B do not necessarily correspond to the original order.
List A
Be My Wife - David Bowie link
Homosapien - Pete Shelley link
It's Not the Same - Little Anthony & The Imperials link
Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - The Temptations link
Break It Up - Patti Smith link
List B
Into Temptation - Crowded House link
Smoke - Cornelius link
Da Doo Ron Ron - The Crystals link
Ai No Corrida - Quincy Jones link
The Beat Goes On - Buddy Rich link

"U2 routinely spent a year in the studio...I have a theory: if you put four monkeys in the studio for a year with Lanois and Eno and Lillywhite, they would make a pretty good record, too."

Comfortably A here, I think.

Well as it looks like we're only getting one tie-break tonight, I'll give each track a little more individual attention. I haven't checked what I thought of their original lists and so am voting purely on the five put forward.
List A
Be My Wife - David Bowie link
Always an odd track -commercial with its relentless hooks, but also little like a mainstream record of the time. The interesting thing about tracks like this and Sound and Vision is how the lyrical bleakness (and in this case desperation) is contrasted by the exhuberance of the music. Anyway great track.
Homosapien - Pete Shelley link
A notably tougher, sleazier track than many of its synth-pop contemporaries, as if Shelley was still trying to marshal the confrontational attitudes of punk. It promised for an exciting solo career..which unfortunately never came. Another strong pick.
It's Not the Same - Little Anthony & The Imperials link
Classic, booming ballad in the early/mid sixties style. The production and particularly the arrangement, with its sudden moments of calm before the storm, are stronger than the actual song. Another very good pick.
Papa Was a Rollin' Stone - The Temptations link
Undeniably great. When you go into a tiebreak like this, you give yourself one safe bet that you hope will balance some of your more individual choices. This is obviously that pick -and there's nothing wrong with that.
Break It Up - Patti Smith link
For me one of the weakest tracks on Horses. It's the closest the album gets to mainstream seventies rock, especially with its show off guitar soloing (Lenny Kaye?). Not for me.
List B
Into Temptation - Crowded House link
Crowded House in sombre mood. This is the kind of crafted songwriting, all pained sentiment, that bores me rigid.
Smoke - Cornelius link
Whatever happened to Cornelius? I couldn't recall this-interesting mash up of all kinds of elements, has an almost Talking Heads 'Remain in Light' era feel in places. Enjoyed it.
Da Doo Ron Ron - The Crystals link
Of all those girl group classics, this isn't a particular favourite, I find it a little too insistent. But it's fine in its own way.
Ai No Corrida - Quincy Jones link
Nice to hear it again. I wouldn't say this was a lost classic or anything like that, but it's good.
The Beat Goes On - Buddy Rich link
Always great fun and the best pick from B.
A wins this for me.

B
By the tiniest margin. I can't hear the Crowded House song due to country restrictions, but the strength of the Quincy Jones track and the Buddy Rich win me over. I dislike the Patti Smith on the other list, and still don't understand the fuss over 'Homosapien.' It hurts to vote against the Tempts, but I think overall B is just more my thing. I wonder if I voted for it in the original match...?

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

A's perhaps a bit more obvious, but then again, it's a bit more hard-hitting.
A it is.

For the Pete Shelley and the Temps.
B you stole two of my past ones, Smoke and the Buddy Rich. I was going to use the Buddy Rich again myself this time, so a bit of spite.
