I happen to know he only uses it because he is actually named after a really bad Nu-Metal band.

The story Ive heard, is that for many years in his youth, Mike Boom was under the tutelage of a wise sage, who taught him all there was to know in the field of popular music. However in later years, he rejected this knowledge and went to live in the desert to make his own music.

From time to time he emerges from seclusion to take part in competitions such as this...
