"U2 routinely spent a year in the studio...I have a theory: if you put four monkeys in the studio for a year with Lanois and Eno and Lillywhite, they would make a pretty good record, too."

I want to like B more than I actually do; A seems narrower but manages to pull a couple of rabbits out the hat. Among the new 5, I love the Church song, and the Deaf School choice is a barely remembered teenage recollection that sounds glorious in my memory. But what is the appeal of the Mental As Anything song?

Hell of a lot of cross over on those lists artistwise

Pretty difficult to call that one, A is marginally stronger than be despite a rare Smiths occurence.

A has the better HMHB song as well:

5 am and I'm wide awake
Got uncontrollable urge to take
a 5 mile walk around the Ogwen lake
curse these restless legs.

I'm Jay Z on a bad day, Shakespeare on my worst days

Bear baiting & dog fights a speciality.

Two people singing from similar song sheets here, and I don't just mean a few crossover artists - they both go beyond the stereotypical Mojo reader's remit of what is "fun" and have the temerity to realise that it was the thirteen year old sister who was right all along, not the seventeen year old A-Level taking nerdy brother. Of course "Live It Up" is a great pop song (and better than half of the songs in this year's cup). I mean, for fuck's sake. We don't all sit in our studies stroking our chins while we listen to every "great" piece of music, you know. Some of us dance around handbags or drink Pernod and Coke at the bar, too. Despite Mental As Anything and the majesty that is Beyonce's single, I'm still drawn to B's slightly funkier, soulful, eclectic vibe.

B by a whisker. Shame one of them has to go out, though.

There's a few I have to forgive in order to vote for B, but it's still pretty nice.

B seems like it would be more fun.
