A,A,A,A,B,B,B,B,B,B,A,A,A,A etc

Postby Neil Jung » 09 Feb 2009, 13:13

Have you noticed how some of the voting seems to have lots of As then lots of Bs, then lots of As again etc etc? It hardly ever goes A,B,A,C,A,B.

A. are people just voting by copying the person before
B. this is just another example of the seemingly unrandom nature of randomnessnessness.

I tend not to look at the votes before I vote. I just look at the lists and then cast my vote. So I guess the answer is B.

Just as long as no-one declares that it's more likely someone will vote B after a string of A votes...

So, if there's a vote for 'A' behind one of the three doors, and a door is opened to show a donkey....er, hang on a minute....

This definitely happens. I think lists that are beginning to lose heavily elicit a sympathy vote.

The thread title reminds me how seldom we see Abba chosen in these lists, despite the fact we often have people falling over themselves to declare their melodic genius and talk about their "perfect pop" in Yakety Yak. Is the truth that they are more admired than actually liked in a passionate, personal way? I reckon so, although if Quaco had a list in the competition I'm sure he'd pick them.

I think Abba would be a risky pick. Supposedy we all love Dancing Queen; I loathe it and their entire ouevre. Usually they polarise opinion; it could be a real turn-off for an otherwise solid list. It's safer to choose an acknowledged indie or rock classic or at least an interesting obscure but worthy track from the past.

Personally, I just choose songs I love but edit out the riskier choices.

I knew there was a Genesis/ABACAB joke in there somewhere, but that wasn't it.

The fact that there are lots of As followed by lots of Bs is just coincidence but the fact that is is often repeated from one tie to the next is not as people typically log in and vote at similar times each day so votes are cast in a roughly similar sequence. Also, as voting is driven by musical tastes (one would hope), many of those that voted for a certain list in one tie will likely vote for the same list as each other in another tie.

Hopefully this makes some kind of sense :?

If not just listen to Abacab and maybe it will all become clear.

Blimey, I didn't get it! Obviously I set up the Abacab line for a joke, but the insertion of Mike mid-line threw me completely. I'll get my greatcoat.
