Aside from one or two picks - the Verlaines - A is tediously unimaginative, and there are a couple of things that really let it down - Ryan Adams? B's new five are not as interesting as the rest of the list but they maintain the overall feel of quality. And anyone who votes against 'Cinnamon Girl' is a loony.

Two excellent lists, with both additional 5s showing the competitors mean business so it's a tough decision to make. I think B probably shades it with the new tracks but I've been behind A all the way so far and it probably shades it overall. The Mott, Al Green & Trick combo though nearly did sway me but not quite.

Too close to call. They're both decent lists but very very mixed in terms of quality.

I might come back to this.

I'm playing "Strawberry Wine" right now and it nearly brought tears to my eyes a minute ago. I've let too much of Adams' career pass me by. I know he's an annoying twat but he's also a real talent when he focuses.

It's a great song!

I like a hell of a lot of A and that holds sway despite the new 5 of B being hard to match.

Couldn't decide. It went to points. 43-43. So it goes to numbers of 3 point songs:

List A:

I Wanna Be Adored - The Stone Roses
See Emily Play - Pink Floyd
Vapour Trail – Ride
The Rainbow - Talk Talk
Pink Moon - Nick Drake

List B:

The Durutti Column - Sketch For Summer
The Nazz - Open My Eyes
Young Marble Giants - Final Day
Life Without Buildings - The Leanover
Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes

Five each! Right, I feel I owe it to these two to investigate a few of the songs I don't know. If B had chosen a different Arthur Russell track, I would have bitten, but Is It All Over My Face is no patch on Arm Around You or That's Us.

Tough call. A, just.

B has a much stronger extra 5 and has more flavour and personality, A seems to have dribbled any earlier promise away despite great Stones and Drake in the last 10. Hate to vote against the Pink Floyd, Supremes, Beach Boys and Kinks but

B quite comfortably here. A's rather narrow fixation on rock has always sat slightly uncomfortably with me, despite some undeniably good songs. The additional five hardly improve things. B comes up trumps with a nice Al Green track and one of Tricky's better songs.

This has to be the round that Pablo Picasso finally gets the bum's rush, how did it make it this far??

B Has good old Pablo the best Beatles song, the only Mott song and a decent enough Tricky track.

A starts well, goes shit and finishes well. It also includes poor selections from good bands.

Supremes - what's wrong with everybody picking Nathan Jones?
JB - there are better tracks.
The Beat - There are much better tracks
Nick Drake - with all that choice why Pink Moon?

But It also has a great Stone Roses song, See Emily Play, a perenial in past BCB cups for me, Muddy Waters, Hallogallo which would probably have won it alone against old Pablo, good Stones and Smiths tracks.

A by the proverbial

Me too. A has all sorts of good stuff - and the first ten are very strong, but the rest don't hang together for me in any cohesive way. For some reason, B's list works.
