Which song do you wish you had chosen?

Postby Copehead » 15 Apr 2008, 01:50

Which song do you wish you had chosen for the cupafter seeing it on someone elses list?

For me it was Jackson, should perhaps have had that instead of Avril Lavigne :)

What a cracking song, what's a pepper sprout, sounds vile?
And sometimes I ride on bus x82, say what!

Not that I saw any of these on anyone's list - but I agonised over my Joni choice. I'm simply not a huge fan, have one album and quite like 'Paris' and so listed her in a cynical way, to capture the votes which Sandy Denny garnered in round one. As it turned out Joni was pivotal - you guys either love or hate her.

But how would any of the following have gone instead?

Concubine - Butthole Surfers
Fantastic Life! - The Fall
Nothing Special - Bastro

.....not much better I fear...

The Butthole Surfers choice would probably have garnered my vote.

I would've gone crazy for a Bastro pick!

I wish I'd picked Calvary Cross by Richard Thompson at some point. God, there are loads. I know have text document on the Mac which gets songs added to it as and when I hear them so that next year is a doddle. How sad is that?

Swell Maps - Lets Build a Car. I could kick myself. And if I had accidentally swallowed a concoction of ketamine, absynth and frogspawn then maybe I would have been temporarily delirious enough to have chosen this tragic accident of a song(?)... and then kicked myself to death with a pair of steel-toe pit boots.

I would have applauded it.

I jammed a couple of times with a cat from Chicago who cited them as influencing the kind of sound he wanted to go for. He was one of these drummers that hit really fucking hard, but with that intense math-like precision and had a bunch of 'songs' worked out in his head but needed a guitar player to help realise 'em. I think we jammed about 4 times before his intensity started to really grate on my nerves.

My list was immaculate, by the way. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

You would have got stick for the first one, but you would have been right. I love it and think it a genuine classic - unlike say, off the top of my head Sk8er Boi - but some have a problem with it.

Sk8er Boi is for pre-pubescent, acne infested, feeble minded, amoeba like cells. Kylie is cool.

A Tribe Called Quest - Excursions
At the Drive In - Invalid Litter Dept
Swell Maps - Read About Seymour
Mission of Burma - Academy Fight Song

all were on my shortlist but binned when I saw them cropping up elsewhere.

I was going to post up my next five but on the extremely unlikely event that these may be on any current Cuppers next 5 list, I'll refrain. There's nothing on my list that I don't love but I probably had better BCB-centric choices ready to go in my longlist, which will now be archived for another bloody year.

Barring extraordinary evidence in a list to the contrary (which would doom the list, I should add), I shall be voting against this song henceforth.
It falls into the same category of, say, "Move On Up," or that other cut from Curtis which I won't get exactly right so I won't type.

I have a single by them covering My Dad Is Dead's 'Nothing Special' on one side and MDID covering Bastro's 'Flesh Coloured House' on t'other.

The Bastro track just rips and snarls out of the speakers in that real maelstrom of fuzz guitar and drum roll that takes the top of one's head off. Blinding. Plus it's about killing people.

Wire - Song 1. Well you would wouldn't you? With such a rich mine of material to choose from you would definitely choose this pointless and sub-standard instrumental. Unless of course you were sober or unaffected by strong hallucinogens or of sound mental ability or vaguely conscious. In which case you would avoid it like you would avoid a Brazilian wandering spider in your toilet.
