How many songs do you know from Match 3-4?

Postby RcL » 14 Apr 2008, 02:05

Let's be honest here - count how many songs of these forty you know well enough to vote on...

I'm not knocking the choosers - I always find it tough to choose between songs I love which others know and risking songs other don't know... the acts aren't especially obscure in these lists but I know so few of the songs well enough to comment.

List A

(Just Walk) In My Shoes -Gladys Knight & The Pips
London Social Degree -Billy Nicholls
Freddie's Dead -Curtis Mayfield
Are You Trying To Get Rid Of Me Baby -Candy & The Kisses
Neat Neat Neat - The Damned
Michalangelo - The 23rd Turnoff
Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
The Man With The Red Face - Laurent Garnier
Streets Of Calcutta - Arnanda Shankar
Woman Of The Ghetto - Marlena Shaw
We Love You - The Rolling Stones
I'm Rowed Out - The Eyes
Flash - The Duke Of Burlington youtube link
The Revolutionary Spirit - The Wild Swans
Coney Island Baby - Lou Reed
Going Back To My Roots - Odyssey
Go Back - Crabby Appleton
What Goes On - Velvet Underground
Hell Is Round The Corner - Tricky
The Secret Life of Arabia -David Bowie

List B:

Panic In Detroit - David Bowie
Yellow Brick Road - Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Israelites - Desmond Dekker
These Days - Nico
Game of Pricks - Guided By Voices
Painbirds - Sparklehorse
Early Morning Cold Taxi - The Who
Pretty Persuasion - R.E.M.
Jump Into The Fire - Harry Nilsson
Modern World - The Modern Lovers
Maybe I'm Amazed - The Faces
Why - The Byrds
The Helicopter Spies - Swell Maps
Matilda Mother - Pink Floyd
Mr. Pitiful - Otis Redding
Yesterday’s Numbers - Flamin’ Groovies link
Everybody's Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey) - The Feelies link
The Needle Has Landed - Neko Case link
The Old Man's Back Again - Scott Walker link
Fight Fire - The Golliwogs

Only 12-15 for me. And I'd be surprised if the average is above that.

It's 30, actually. This lot:

(Just Walk) In My Shoes -Gladys Knight & The Pips
London Social Degree -Billy Nicholls
Freddie's Dead -Curtis Mayfield
Neat Neat Neat - The Damned
Michalangelo - The 23rd Turnoff
Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix
Streets Of Calcutta - Arnanda Shankar
Woman Of The Ghetto - Marlena Shaw

I'm Rowed Out - The Eyes
Coney Island Baby - Lou Reed
Going Back To My Roots - Odyssey

Yellow Brick Road - Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band
Israelites - Desmond Dekker
These Days - Nico
Game of Pricks - Guided By Voices
Early Morning Cold Taxi - The Who
Pretty Persuasion - R.E.M.
Modern World - The Modern Lovers
Maybe I'm Amazed - The Faces
Why - The Byrds
The Helicopter Spies - Swell Maps
Matilda Mother - Pink Floyd
Mr. Pitiful - Otis Redding
Yesterday’s Numbers - Flamin’ Groovies
The Old Man's Back Again - Scott Walker
Fight Fire - The Golliwogs

I don't think they're that obscure, Roddy. The Golliwogs are hardly known but that song's on Nuggets II. The Eyes, and the 23rd Turnoff are also on garage comps - can't recall the titles right now. And the rest are by known artists. Except for, to be fair, the Ananda Shankar song - wouldn't have heard it unless a BCB-er pointed it out to me. Everybody should know it, tho'!

Yes. I can never thank you and Moddie enough.
I put it on one of my Mix Club discs and the recipient said it sounded like Joy Division. Hm.

Ok, well that was me, but in my defence, I think that I've been taken out of context. I only said that the bass intro sounded a bit like a Joy Division intro. And it does. Listen to the first 15 seconds or so, before the drums kick in, and tell me that it couldn't be Joy Division. Anyway, whatever, great track.

Familiar with 12 from A and 9 from B but would possibly recognise more from each.

8 in total from both lists, the last 20 years don't seem to have existed for these two. Is Pretty Persuasion the most recent song on either list? If so that makes it 24 years since either of these people heard a decent track.

Oh hang on There's Neko Case, someone recent who actually sound they were recorded over 30 years ago :D

I can't be sure how recent Arnanda Shankar is and the Wild Swans track is probably around the same time as the REM one.

I voted B because there were about 4 tracks on there that would get a toe tap from me. A chose a few artists I like but tended to go for some of their more tedious tracks as if deliberately trying to avoid the stuff that is more famous because it is actually very good.

A has got some stuff that looks intriguing but without hearing Candy and the Kisses I can't be sure I'd like it but I bet I would.

match 2 was even worse, I'd only recognise about 5 of those tracks.

Let's hope the winner comes from match 1 or 3, all four of the lists there are better than all four of the lists in matches 2 & 4, but that is the luck of the draw, some groups are groups of death and from others lacklustre lists come through because they are up against exercises in tedium :)

To be fair, B provided links for their most recent five.

I couldn't have listened to those very easily anyway, my work computer doesn't have speakers, and working 12 hour days I don't have much spare time as I would like for doing things like chasing up obscurities that could be my next favourite tune however much I'd like to. I'd perobably do better if I was at home. But posting links to the songs is a very good idea that should be encouraged. I just haven't got a clue how to do it, but links to some of the obscurer songs on my list would have been useful. I tend to go for fairly well known stuff but having people hear No Pussy Blues could only have increased my votes

I know 24 of the songs from these two lists.

I'm confused. Is this a good or a bad thing?

Ah, fair enough... I didn't realise. I spent some time trying to figure out what the connection was!

They would become Creedence Clearwater Revival.

you should be sure of what you're saying before making such definitive statements. In fact that there's a 90's techno track on there. Not that it matters.

In your opinion of course. I rarely agree with your judgements on any of the lists so really what could be dull to you may be great to someone else.
