A was marginally ahead anyway mainly due to great original choices from Maximo Park & Sam Brown. 'Hand in Glove' is the best pick in the additional 5s as well so that decides it.

The Fall - Cruiser's Creek
Maximo Park - Girls Who Play Guitars
Elliott Smith - Divison Day
The Beach Boys - Don't Worry Baby
Bic Runga - Sway
Sam Brown - Stop
Womack & Womack - Teardrops
Elvis Costello & Allen Toussaint - Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further?
Iggy Pop - The Passenger
Eels - Hey Man (Now You're Really Living)
Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music
The Louvin Brothers - Must You Throw Dirt In My Face
Hoodoo Gurus - Bittersweet
The Smiths - Hand In Glove
Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You

Even if you ignore "Sk8er Boi" in list B (and you can't really), the fact of the matter is that A is getting stronger and stronger with each round. Great new choices in Stardust, Arthur Conley and one of the Smiths finest, while they already had Iggy's astonishing "the Passenger," the Fall's rollicking "Cruiser's Creek" and one of the Beach Boys' most beatific to go with Womack & Womack's "Teardrops." Some of it's a mixed bag, but overall it mostly works.

I think with the original 10, B might have had this, the jumps from Louis Armstrong to Culture to Cale and LCD Soundsystem suggest my kinda fun, but the next 5 are all over the place and then there's the Lavinge choice...which I'm sure they'll explain when it proves to be a clincher. What a horrible, caterwauling, petulant track that is!

So, B snatches defeat from the jaws of victory and A comes up the rear with a solid next 5.

If I had to choose a list of 30-35 tracks, 6 of B's list would be on there.

And yet, with Avril Lavigne, nearly throws it away.

But not quite.

I admire the way B has included the votes of their kids - that's cute.

A is, well, I have forgotten what was on A since I looked at it about 30 seconds ago...

*checks - could have done with his kids' choices too, instead of Bic Runga

B's new picks just aren't inspiring me, though the initial 10 has its moments. A, on the other hand, has Pop, the Beach Boys (unimpeachable song, as overplayed/overused as it may be), and the clincher, the classic Louvin Brothers one. Again, if you ain't going new, at least go old, and do it without being obvious.

Okay A now has great Conley, Smiths and Stardust and bland Hoodoo Gurus. B has wonderful Wire and Otis Redding and blustery auld Nick Cave and Wishbone Ash ( i once heard a really good Wishbone Ash track on Freak Zone - it started off with about two minutes of dampened strings chucking away and then exploded into some fierce drum rolls and proto-Television/Eight Miles High guitaring with wordless choral singing - but everything i've heard since has been drearily sub Thin Lizzy wank). The rest of B, other than the John Cale and Undertones still underwhelms.

A for Elliott, Womack and Beach Boys plus the 3 newies

Avril Lavigne's fine, I have no problem with that choice. However A by a wee bit. That fact that the insufferable Elvis Costello gets to work with the great Allen Toussaint plain irritates me. And there's a weaker Gurus track, a decent Smiths track and that Stradust brings back fond memories of a few years ago.

A gets 10s for the fall, The Ig, The Smiths and Stardust, B wins for having Avril Lavign, a great pop song, and something that a great many of these worthy lists seem to feel is beneath them.

At least A is having a go here as well with Stardust.
