A 17 Vs B 29

A just doesn't float my vote, a 4 for Ladysmith BM

B is the sublime and the rediculous it is either 5s & 4s or 1s

5s for NickDrake, Sandy Denny, Scott Walker and the creepy nasty Nick Cave and 4 for Marquee Moon.

It is a flamboyant and melodramatic list and I like half of it a lot and th erest not in the slightest.

Lovely tracks from Nick and Sandy make the difference for me.

I know almost nothing of A, but it intrigues me more, and not many people are voting for it so I might as well.

Hercules - Aaron Neville
Caroline, No - Beach Boys
Idiot Wind - Bob Dylan
Chase The Devil - Max Romeo
Marquee Moon - Television

I really, really, really like all of these. That's 5/10 which wouldn't disgrace themselves in a list of my own devising. I also think that B covers their bases in a really cool, unobtrusive way - it's not esoteric in the slightest, it has a familiar, patterned feel to it, yet it's full of delights. Could go far.

Damned tough. Excellent lists, both. A has more surprises, and big ups for being the first list that's very black but also very diverse. But B takes it by the tiniest hair for one simple reason- even the predictable acts choose one of my very favorite songs by the artist. Plus the DeVaughn is one of the most inspired choices yet and brought back a nice memory from my childhood.

By the way, I did actually mean to add an adendum that A's list looked top notch. I'm certainly moving round to picking lists on a vibe but, unfortunately for A, the hunch can't win out against the tried and true.

B edges it, for me - strong selections especially in its latter half.

Not that I want to get into some idiotic 'my list was blacker than yours' thing but, in the interests of clarity, the only white artists on my list were Aesop Rock and Elvis Costello.

Anyway, not the point, not the point ...

A is pretty decent, but B just has some of my favourite songs of all time on it.
