Both lists know their way round the canon, and make smart choices (notably, both choose better Beatles choices than the overplayed "Rain"). List A then delves into the 'new canon' of alt-rock with great choices from Dinosaur Jr, Smiths, Pixies, Gang Of Four.

List B is more capricious, more pop-based and I just think it's a bit more fun. I like A a lot, but I;m going for B.

Tragically b included Back of my Hand by The Jags when they could have chosen something good

Perhaps I'm just going for obscurity here, but I just find B more interesting.
That Jags selection was shit though.

Very, very close. I'm going with B, just 'cos I want to avoid the onerous Gang of Four.

On what planet is Rain overplayed? This may be the worst statement of the Cup. It's popular here, and it's a great song - but overplayed?!?!?!? You honestly think Here, There, and Everywhere is a great Beatles track? I can think of five better on Revolver alone....Let's try...She Said She Said, Taxman, And Your Bird Can Sing, Tomorrow Never Knows, Eleanor Rigby, Got to Get You into My Life, For No One, I'm Only Sleeping, Good Day Sunshine, Dr Robert, I Want to Tell You, Love You Too, hell that was more than five...and on many days I'll even take Yellow Submarine over HT&E because anybody can sing it. Back to Rain, possibly Ringo's finest moment, the bass and the guitars are stellar, the vocals are great and John has written some of the best music of the whole pysch period. Couple that with John, Paul and George Martin (whoever you want to credit) having a shitload of fun with the production. Great song.
the Eagles suck.

The sheer weight of list A demands some sort of rebellion but list B is just too whimpy for the job.

Of course, its A.

Although A has fine moments,

Dancing Barefoot does it for me.

And quite a few more other fine reasons.

Wow wow wow - this is tough.

There's lots to love about B's list. I think that the transition from the Chambers Bros to Straight to Hell is an inspired pairing. The Squeeze track is ace. Steppenwolf and California Love are unique but truly great choices from left field, and the Aretha, RT and Fogerty are nice adds. I am a bit put off by the Turtles and McCoys, to be honest.

However.....

A's run from REM to Television to Beach Boys to Kinks to Smiths, Go4, Smiths, Tengo, Pixies are all stellar choices, and throwing back to Ray and Otis - You've just tracked my personal trajectory. A bit canonical, perhaps, but the song choices are undeniable.

A, just.
Only time will tell if we stand the test of time.... - Sammy Hagar
