I like the cut of B's jib but A is three sheets to the wind.

A

Very difficult choice. It boiled down to 7 tracks on either side but these personal favourites swung the vote;

Clash - Straight to Hell
Go-Betweens - Cattle and Cane
Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place

Not to be disrespectful but I didn't think either list were particularly strong. Certainly not as good as mine. It's funny how this has turned out.

I agree with this to a point, because, funnily enough - my list was actually better than yours.

Damn close, but there's slightly more brilliance in list:

A has poor new choices, but still wins out over a rather patchy B list.

A good Allrounder.

It's looking like A might just have overtaken B at this point. not by much mind, just a couple of hundred miles.

Here we go. Another long reply.

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation
Black screams and shouts in a nother of his ridiculous guitar pop epics about, well, mutiliation. Doolittle must rank as one of the most inconsistent "classic" records ever, Wave of Mutilation embodies both its strengths (that nasty, vicious, screaming ) and its irritations (the overcooked choruses). Still fab though.

+4
DJ Shadow - High Noon
Shadow's unfolding, menacing excercise of sample paranoia isn;t quite the best thing on Endtroducing: that would be Building Steam...yet it shows the nature of sampling and how it's just so more than placing a few old records together. Cyclical, undercut by one repeating refrain. Pretty powerful in its own way.
+4

Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place
Byrne celebrates the life of small things, which makes more sense in the Stop Making Sense film where he dances with a mock lamppost. But its warmth and generosity should be pretty apparent, the gentle, unperturbed cousin of "Once in A Lifetime". +4

Eminem - Stan
Mathers' narrative is so simple as to be absoloutely heavy-handed. Yet, in its melding the dangerous MOR with the superficial danger of Eminem, it rams a point that should've been beyond doubt by then. That obsession with fame, the idea of singers as role models and investing too much in those who don't even know you. The hackneyed nature of it might be off-putting, but it's also necessary +3

Pere Ubu - Non-Allignment Pact
You know, sometimes pyschosis is all you need. A myriad of flase endings, a fight to the death, and it just keeps on going. Not so much breathless as deathless. Every time you think the song's about to end, it just keeps on going, yet it only last three minutes. Rockabilly of feedback, kicking and pleading for release" It's all because of you" is a threat, demand and promise. And, in Dave Thomas's vocal delivery, the inspiration for Thom Yorke. It's a shame Thom forgot to bring the sense of humour. Exhausting. Song of the round.+5

But really, it's coinflipping time. Will get back to it..

I think what it comes down to is the fact that A has the stronger Velvet Underground choice. But...B has Eric B & Rakim. Oh Jeez.

Hell, seeming as my vote mightn't count, it's A, but goddamn it was tight.

Of course, I was mostly stoned at the time.

I think the deadline is over, no?

If that's the case, then A is our first finalist.

Well if the deadline's passed I don't know if my vote counts, but I was going to go for A anyway.

nope, i'd say it was worse to lose in the first round.

it means we all think your music taste is shit.

semi's?

i can live with that, i thought i'd be out in the second round, but like whoever beat me today, i came back and won. i got lucky. then against pieter, i won after a replay. really lucky.

i'm right chuffed to have gotten this far, and no mistake.

thanks mr tapioca head for organising this cup thing.

PS: my next five would have been...

stairway to heaven - led zeppelin
bohemian rhapsody - queen
i just called to say i love you - stevie wonder
lucy in the sky with diamonds - william shatner
agadoo - the sadest twats in the history of music

admit it, i would have won wouldn't i?
