Your full list

Postby Ranking Ted » 15 Feb 2014, 01:13

In the interests of science, curiosity and sheer boredom, please post up your full unedited and unexpurgated list. Once you've been unceremoniously turfed out, of course

This will either ensure an industrial scale apology or an opportunity for further piss taking

Were you from the match where both players had Echo and the Bunnymen on their lists? I don't think they fit with the pattern of your list. Not just because I dislike them - but perhaps you were trying to please the UK voters here.

My list - hadn't thought of any substitutes at the time:

1. Pablove Black - Mr. Music
2. Ernest Ranglin - Ranglin Doddlin
3. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - You're all I Need to get by
4. The Heptones - Message From a Black man
5. Rose Royce - Ooh Boy
6. The Trevor Horn Orchestra - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
7. The Trevor Horn Orchestra - Sh-Boom (Life Could be a Dream)
8. Kaleidoscope - Petit Fleur
9. Dr. Hook - In Over my Head
10. Kings of Convenience - Homesick

The first half - trax 1-5 - got a lot of praise. The second half was apparently sunk by Trevor Horn Orch. and Dr. Hook. TVO were universally condemned. So what's wrong with TVO? Two established 1950s classics getting the Trevor Horn treatment old school style? I find both refreshing and on par with the originals. They were for an OST to a film set in the 1950s. Dr. Hook - cannot understand. Is it this particular track that offends or is it the band itself that are a bcb joke? I don't think I've seen any other Dr Hook submissions in my four years of bcb cups, so that may be it.

Two tracks by the same band - that's madness

Yes, that's madness

.

Round 1

1. Gene Pitney - It Hurts to be in Love
2. The Ponys - Double Vision
3. The Hollies - Here I Go Again
4. Velvet Underground - I Can't Stand It
5. The Vampire Sound Incorporation - The Lions and the Cucumber
6. BiG GrunT - 11 Mustachioed Daughters
7. Hall & Oates - Alone Too Long
8. Ride - All I Can See
9. The Impressions - Choice of Colors
10. The Monkees - Circle Sky

Funny comments about Hall & Oates. Not quite sure what I was thinking there, other than I've been enjoying the TV series Hello Ladies - it's the opening theme song; I wasn't familiar with it and I like it. Coulda been a dealbreaker, that.

BiG GrunT didn't start well, but turned out to be a heavy-hitter on my list. Who knew?

Round 2

1. Bo Diddley - Bad Trip
2. Ride - All I Can See
3. Gene Pitney - It Hurts to Be in Love
4. Velvet Underground - I Can't Stand It
5. The Bee Gees - Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You
6. Lulu - Stealing My Love From Me
7. Iggy & the Stooges - I'm Sick of You
8. The Impressions - Choice of Colors
9. BiG GrunT - 11 Mustachioed Daughters
10. Cowboy Junkies - Murder Tonight in the Trailer Park

I was a bit surprised at the derisive comments about the Cowboy Junkies. I was trying to throw in some Canadian content, and something Cup-different. Coulda been another dealbreaker. And I thought there were more Lulu fans around here. Hmmmm

Round 3

1. Fleetwood Mac - Sunny Side of Heaven
2. Ride - All I Can See
3. Everly Bros. - Gone Gone Gone
4. Peter Murphy - Indigo Eyes
5. Irma Thomas - Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)
6. The Bee Gees - Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You
7. Iggy & the Stooges - I'm Sick of You
8. The Impressions - Choice of Colors
9. BiG GrunT - 11 Mustachioed Daughters
10. Neil Young - The Old Laughing Lady

I've seen "Cut You Up" used in a couple of Cups, and never saw one negative comment. Color me shocked at the scathing remarks this tune brought. Is it really that much worse? I guess so.

Round 4

1. Mansun - The Chad Who Loved Me
2. Everly Bros. - Gone Gone Gone
3. Dream Syndicate - Tell me When It's Over
4. Joe Strummer - Love Kills
5. Irma Thomas - Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)
6. Iggy & the Stooges - I'm Sick of You
7. The Impressions - Choice of Colors
8. BiG GrunT - 11 Mustachioed Daughters
9. Ride - Furthest Sense
10. Eagles of Death Metal - Anything 'Cept the Truth

Delighted that the Dream Syndicate was so well-received - I wasn't too sure going in. The Eagles of Death Metal was meant to be fun. I like it. Didn't think it would be that unpopular. I think Copehead was the only one what gave it a smile.

Round 5

1. The Rolling Stones - If You Can't Rock Me
2. Machines of Loving Grace - Golgotha Tenement Blues
3. The Guess Who - Laughing
4. Joe Strummer - Love Kills
5. Dream Syndicate - Tell me When It's Over
6. Irma Thomas - Anyone Who Knows What Love Is (Will Understand)
7. Iggy & the Stooges - Sick of You
8. Nirvana - Love Buzz
9. Ride - Furthest Sense
10. Badfinger - Baby Blue

I really wanted to try to add in 'newer' stuff....but I didn't have much confidence in my selections so I went with the 90s. I struggled with my opener - wanted something dynamic and classic. In hindsight I shoulda gone with my other choice. Meh.

This year I got the impression that Pop gems were getting better reception than the seeming backlash against obscurity for its own sake. Wrong again! That's where The Guess Who came from.

I realize not everyone has seen Breaking Bad, but I thought that ending with "Baby Blue" was rather inspired. It landed with a resounding thud. Whaddya gonna do?

you guys missed the boat on the Shag Rats, I tell you
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
