B (like a few other lists this round) is getting a touch scattered, but it's still all at least good. A has added a bit more "not my thing" to a list that was already pretty rife with it.

A's one of my favourite lists, but B would have got my vote in some of the other ties. Great Stereolab addition.

A looks and sounds like someone who subscribes to eclectic hipster record shop mailouts and buys their end of year selection (see Onyeabor and Cosmetics). To me, the inclusion of both Eric B & Rakim AND Stereolab speaks volumes - this list is trying to appeal to everyone by concocting an algorithm designed to win the hearts of BCB, both young and old, flashing their credentials in the style of a man dressed in a football pundit shirt down the local strip club. Sure, we all do that to a certain extent, but they've spread themselves too thin IMO. There's a sop to the old vocal vein with Pitney, the acoustic tingle of Martyn and even a bit of club dancefloor nous with Clubbed to Death (which in fairness is a great choice), the new wave of Human League , mediocre French hiphop, acid rock and a bit of funk. It's a bit too obvious what they're trying to do. And deep down that bothers me. There's no prog. It's a Manchester City of lists - far too naked in ugly ambition.

B, well, it's a restricted palette in many ways with a studious avoidance of anything remotely modern. This was compiled by someone who desperately wants to have been 18 in 1967 but doesn't realise that, actually things were pretty fucking shit back then. They didn't even have colour TV! Aesthetically though, there's an attention to detail here that is rare in BCB. None of your hotpotch scattergun desultory trying to hit all the right notes and missing all of them. I will say that none of the songs really did anything in any way for me at all, BUT for sticking to their guns and not attempting to play the obvious game, they are invoking the spirit of the competition.

So B it is.
