B

If only because Animal Nitrate is utterly magnificent.

Cripes.

I have pretty much consistently voted against B (sorry, mate) despite actually being more than a bit fond of many of its choices. I just preferred the lists it was previously up against. I'm a sucker for good power pop.

I have to say Citadel is a shit song by a band unravelling into a mess of affectation. And Suede were the poster boys of my dissatisfaction with the NME's appetite for the newest poster boy sensation. He had nice hair but shit pipes.

The rest is koala tea.

A's preference for the Ike and Tina version of Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter is perplexing to me. Nina's version jungledrums this soulschtick upside the head.

Poor choice of Blondie tune. I can never avoid picturing this:

Which is no fault of the band nor the tune but it's a bit weak for my tastes.

What else?

The Damned? Fuck that. I'm from Australia and don't really fancy that thin pommy plastic punk.

It's B.

Of course it is.

B
Good.

He's usually right ;)

A for the Philly boy and the damn bug song (though as pointed out elsewhere I'd opt for Nina's take first) towards the end (plus lots of other dandy tunes).

both full of cup-worthy tracks, both have great variety as they move, well-built lists. but i hafta go with B. i loved it when it first came up, and it has kept its kathish edge.

(excellent job both, as well as to that penk person.)

Two very good lists, but B has more vim and vigour to it (also, it beat my own list, so I'd like to have said I was beaten by the overall winner).
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

There's more on B that rubs me the wrong way despite stuff I like. A has the Chambers Brothers, Lee Dorsey and only a fool would deny Radio Free Europe. so A for me. Can you really win the cup with Satellite of Love and Jeepster - seems you can

I've struggled to decide between these so have a adopted a 3 star voting system for each song - 1 star = don't like, 3 stars = like a lot

List A
The Chambers Brothers, I Can't Stand It ***
Kurt Vile, Pretty Pimpin' *
Rod Stewart, (I Know) I'm Losing You ***
David Holmes, Rodney Yates ***
The La's, Feelin' ***
Lee Dorsey, Who's Gonna Help Brother Get Further **
Lush, De-Luxe ***
Reuben Wilson, Inner City Blues **
Bert Jansch, Open Up The Watergate (Let The Sunshine In) ***
LoneLady, Groove It Out *
The Supremes, Bad Weather **
Blondie, Rip Her To Shreds **
Earl Brutus, The S.A.S. And The Glam That Goes With It *
Gil Scott-Heron, Lady Day and John Coltrane ***
The Damned, Anti-Pope ***
Underworld, Dirty Epic *
R.E.M., Radio Free Europe **
Ike & Tina Turner, Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter **
The Creation, Through My Eyes **
Future Islands, Seasons (Waiting On You) (BADBADNOTGOOD Reinterpretation) **

List B

The Fall – Psycho Mafia .. *
Lou Reed – Satellite Of Love .. **
Deerhunter – Never Stops .. **
Mongo Santamaria – Hippo Walk .. ***
The Rolling Stones – Citadel .. **
Suede – Animal Nitrate .. **
Darry Weaver – Itty Bitty Betty ..**
The Ikettes – What’cha Gonna Do (When I Leave You) .. **
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River .. **
The Clash - 1977 .. **
Gwen McCrae - Keep The Fire Burning .. **
Junior Delgado – Sons Of Slaves .. ***
T. Rex – Jeepster .. ***
Ben E. King – Supernatural Thing, Part 1 .. **
Lemonheads - Confetti .. **
The Kinks - Dead End Street .. ***
Freddie Scott - Am I Grooving You .. **
Little Richard – Long Tall Sally .. **
Can – I’m So Green .. ***
The Isley Brothers – Lay Away .. ***

A=44
B=45

Very close. Sorry A, you had more 3 star songs but just a couple more 1 stars ratings. Enjoyed listening through both lists.

B

Both lists suffer from too much straw and not enough machine guns. I would skip half the tracks if they were compilations. I'll go with

A

This completes the voting for the 2016 BCB Cup from the Further Spanish jury. Congratulations to the glorious victor, and thanks to Penk for organizing.

A is pretty good but I think B has looked a winner from the get-go. A playlist I'd be more than happy to spin.
