I was just getting the hang of the non-canon concept, but this year is chock full of it - "Godstar", "Slave to the Rhythm", "The Logical Song", "Let's Dance", "Jamie's Crying", "Solsbury Hill", "I'll Take You There" (x2), Fifth Dimension, Them.....mixed in with a bunch of.....I dunno so far.

Some fascinating lists today, huh. Will be interesting to see how tomorrow and the rest of round 1 go.

May be just me but I felt that in some ties I would have loved to see two extra songs per list to really confirm my vote.....

Yeah, i know what you mean. The problem is just... is the 10+5 format is too many songs for most people?

I'm fine with it personally - maybe now that overall numbers of contestants are down too, maybe the rest are ok too, and we can go back to it next year. Something to think about.

I would have been happy with 10+3 too but I get the point of having bloated lists at the end..also, eight tracks should be enough to do the damage/impress the judges.
I just felt in two ties that one killer pick could have swung my vote.

I think there are canon choices and BCB faves. 'Godstar' is one of the latter, I'd say. I love it but it's starting to become a familiar sight in these competitions - just like 'The Dark End of the Street' and 'Help You, Ann' were eight years ago!

But I can't say I've seen that many canon choices so far. And I'd honestly vote for a list with 'Waterloo Sunset', 'Paperback Writer' and 'Daydream Believer' above anything else I've seen so far this Cup - obvious choices or not. It's good that people dig deep but often it results in stuff that appeals only to the compilers themselves. I think we might have painted ourselves into a corner.

Some of the more 'experienced' Cup-entrants pussied out as well. Their lists surely would have reflected more of what you expect here.

It's only the first day of round 1 people, don't get your Cup knickers in a twist! :)

Really? That's the kind of stuff you usually give me shit about. ;)

Very interesting observation. Maybe that's why some of the 'Cup regulars' aren't interested anymore. Too challenging. :D

It's really nice to see some non-contestants voting.

Whoever made that list in match 3 is probably laughing their arse off about how many people they've managed to suck in.

What a strange start.

It does feel a bit more "real" this year - people going for what they really like rather than trying to play the Cup so to speak (selecting 8 songs which cover the BCB bases). Either that or people are just having a laugh because there are some bizarre choices in those early lists. I managed to play 20+ songs today and only find 2 I liked.

I think I forgot to mention, I played my joker in this first round, and so votes for my list count double. That's ok, isn't it?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
