Well just wondering.

I love NYC.

Sep/Oct can be perfect, and sod's law says that now we've all said May it would be a horrible month! The seasons aren't consistent in the times they come and go really, I remember the first year I moved here was the mildest winter ever recorded, didn't need a coat from March! The last couple of years have been a bit slower to get going weather-wise, and of course, Sandy hit in October two years ago, so it's a lottery!

I would say, decide what things you want to do first and foremost if they are month-dependent, the weather will be what it is (hopefully nice).

It's very tentative but it looks a possibility. We really just want to cram as much into four/five days as we can.

Also, that's when the colors change back east and you might want to take a short trip out of town to do that.

I'd also look at airfare prices flying into Newark vs. LaGuardia or Kennedy - it tends to be much cheaper. But also factor in the train prices from Newark to Manhattan.

Hmm...NYC to Boston internal flight? An hour maybe (similar to LA to Las Vegas)? Cheap too I'd imagine with lots of choice?

You can get a bus from NYC to Boston for around $20 each way as well, takes about 3 hours. I took a bus to Philly a couple of years ago and it only took a couple of hours (and again, was pretty cheap). Saves trekking back out to the airport.

I wonder what the world's tallest Holiday Inn is like. Location might not be great for a tourist though, being just a few blocks from the World Trade Centre.

I have done some reasonably priced Hotels in the city but tend to look for the best deal a couple of days before going up. Last time I went up for an extended trip I did an apartment share in Brooklyn and got a great place for two adults and three girls. It was a four day stay and set me back about $325 for a a third floor with a nice kitchen, two separate bedrooms and a one fantastic stoop (there was also a block party while we were there - you don't get that in a hotel).

I know this is quite a open ended question but what do you think are the best areas to stay in New York?

The fall is usually a nice time of year. Weather is never predictable, but there's generally more rain in the spring than in the fall and summers can be miserably hot and humid. Subway travel becomes a serious challenge in the heat (sweltering on the platform, olfactory assault, etc.).

I always assume that hotels are crazy expensive here, but I never book them so I don't have any advice. If you were staying longer there might be a weekly apartment rental to look into, but that's not applicable... a longer stay might open up better accommodation alternatives. I think there are quite a few hotels below Times Square/midtown, in the 20's and 30's. Our office has a negotiated "rate" with one on 27th Street for visiting consultants, but I don't think I can blag onto that for you (and 2016 is a long ways off).

You want to be in NYC when it's warm enough to walk around. There's plenty of regular touristy things to do and see, but getting the "feel" of the city is important so you want to roam, take chances on places to eat, watch the street parade walk by.

You'll probably fly into JFK. Newark Airport is more difficult to get to and more expensive by taxi.

And yes, a JU will be in order!

Airbnb might be an option for a place too.

And LaGuardia seems to shut down at the drop of a hat. It seems very vulnerable to weather phenomena.
