Normandy
After taking in the trenches in Belgium last year, we're off to the D Day lading beaches, the Bayeux Tapestry & Mont St. Michelle in September.
Who's been to the top end of France (the bit that used to belong to England)?
Gité or châteaux?

Re: Normandy
My dad went to Normandy once. Some fucker threw a grenade at him!
If you're going to Mont St Michel you should go the extra 30 miles to Saint-Malo, which technically is in Brittany but well worth the detour. It's much more impressive than Mont St Michel, in my opinion. Famous for its pears.

Re: Normandy
I went to Normandy a couple of times as a kid. Try Falaise, where William the Conqueror was born - decent castle as I recall. Arromanches is the place where chunks of that Mulberry makeshift dock are just off the beach - it was easy enough for a 12 year old to walk/swim to some bits and climb on them back in the late 70s.
I think we went to Lisieux as well.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

So are my kids, and their mum. They've rented a cottage in Arromanches.
Say hello if you see them.

Re: Normandy
I've been but when I was quite young. Apparently my dad say the Bayeux tapestry 3 times as I ran round it that fast and he was following me...... I've been to Mont St Michel too and was a bit older so could appreciate it more, I'd say it's well worth a visit.

We went to Arromanches but I didn't see them, or rather if I did I didn't realise it.
Hornfleur is worth a visit, Deauville is just a posh Whitby. Caen's nice.

Re: Normandy
So anyway......some holiday photos
Chateau du Baffy where we stopped. Left hand side top floor.
Taken over during WW2, the owner refused to move out so she and her children had to share it for several years with the Germans.
After D-Day the Brits moved in but some of the soldiers looted her silverware
It was eventually tracked down and returned.
Creully Castle about 4 miles away. After D-Day the BBC took over residence here and broadcast the news. The tower on the left is called BBC tower
Arromanches. Parts of the built harbour are still there.
The amazing Memorial of Caen museum. Well worth 4-5 hours of your time
Outside Bayeux cathedral. There's a long embroidery round the corner.
Deauville
Honfleur
Memorial at Omaha Beach. There's a MacDonalds round the corner.
American Cemetery at Omaha Beach
Cherbourg has a Titanic Exhibition on at La Cité de la Mer.
This is the original transatlantic baggage drop-off room and the beginning of the museum
Then we came home
