Considering a week in Scotland
For a week in July. Gotta know if it is a good idea. Hotels are filling up fast.

If you stray outside of the cities, you'll need insect repellent for the midges. Midges aside, we have one of the most beautiful countries in the world AND it's compact, you can see a lot in a week. Base yourself in Glasgow and you can see a lot in a day PLUS you have the added attraction of buying me a pint.

Watching the London leaders and their proxies unite against a simple democratic measure tells me all I need to know about the UK in any form. Their interests are not Scotland's interests.

Thinking Edinburgh and the only place available online is a 600 year old castle/hotel 14 miles from the city. How long is it to Glasgow? I'd love for you to buy me a brew! And my wife will want one, too.

Glasgow and Edinburgh are around 40 miles apart with half hourly buses and trains.

We will probably rent a car. 40 miles is absolutely doable. Where do more Scottish BCBers reside?

Nessie, Agent for the CIA

I'd be pretty surprised if you couldn't get something in Edinburgh. I'll PM some ideas later.

If you don't mind me asking, why such an urgent trip? I'm going in September and I hope the midges of completed their life cycle by then, especially spending several days on Islay.

I found out my school's summer vacation schedule yesterday and the middle of July is best. I will need to go back for summer camp duties in Aug.
A big but has arisen. As the Scots say, my plans and this thread may be moot, man. Just before going to sleep about five hours ago my wife and I were talking and she will be going into the hospital in Aug for an operation and we may not have the money for a trip, certainly not one I envision with a funky old hotel and a rent-a-Mini Cooper, not to mention buying many rounds for my haggis-munching BCB friends. Thanks especially to Hugh for your PM with all those recommendations.
We still may go but my boner for Scotland is receding and uh, gee, this has never happened before.
