Historical Photos of China Project

Postby Insouciant Western People » 12 Jul 2012, 10:47

I thought you all might be interested in seeing this, especially the history and photography enthusiasts - of which I know we have a lot. I find this sort of thing absolutely fascinating.

One of our academics, Dr Yee-Wah Foo, has been heavily involved in this project cataloguing old photos of China. Her grandfather Fu Bingchang was the Chinese Ambassador to Moscow.

Thousands of wonderful photos available to browse here: http://hpc.vcea.net/

I was particularly interested to see the maritime photos, as my great uncle John Wood was out in China in the 30s as First Officer on a merchant navy vessel.

I don't think I've ever seen you look so happy, John.

I think I've been there, the Forbidden City isn't it? I was there in February 2006.

I was relieved of £160 by a conman that day.

I understand it's quite a popular style in China.
