Gene Krupa was the first drummer to use a bass drum in a recording studio. He was also the first person to mount a tom tom onto said bass drum, pretty much defining the modern drum kit.

I also found out that the modern extension to her 'monastery' house was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, known for Battersea Power Station and the K6 Telephone Box (amongst many others)!
