Because their countries are economic basket-cases entirely dependent on public largesse?

The SNP would also hold out for a referendum on independence or my name is Hamish McTavish.

Yeah all our big industries are gone and the oil revenue stream has been milked to with an inch of it's life. We're fuck all use to anyone. You're right! Fuck us!

And of course if the Tories take a pragmatic view, they might grant them this. Then they would probably stay in power in England for my lifetime.

I think this is likely to be on the cards sometime in the next decade. If England can shuffle off Scotland to independence, it can tear up the Barnett formula and rid itself of a fiscal drain, whilst at the same time granting the wishes of millions of Scots who would welcome the chance of going-it-alone. The dividend for the Tories would be a huge reduction in Labour representation at Westminster.

I thought the Scottish Conservatives oppose independence though?

Its not up to the Tories to offer anything to the Nats. At every election in Scotland it is understood that if the SNP get a large majority then a referendum will happen.

I know one person that is actively indepedance minded, most are against and the fact that Eck is a fucking chump, makes their case even weaker.

I'm undecided on independence....although I would like a referendum... I must say, I don't know many people dead against independence.

Whether it is a Tory/LebDem coalition (or agreement) or minority Tory government I think it will lead to a larger SNP vote in next year's local election and therefore an independence referendum.

I know plenty people who favour independence and whilst I am undecided I'm starting to think that Scotland and England are simply too different politically for Scotland to become the kind of sociey I envision if we are continually tethered to our southern neighbours.

Independence will happen someday.

I would seriously think about moving to Scotland to avoid the prospect of a permanent Tory government in England.

That's if they would have me.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, Jim, any referendum held by a Scottish government would be for consultation only, it would not be binding upon the Government of the United Kingdom. Only a Westminster-endorsed plebiscite could be linked to the drawing up of the necessary bill to cede independence for Scotland.

God, this is dragging on. Win's the "popularity of the people" in the face off's against Gordon and tosspot, then promptly sees his party lose seats at election. This is the nearest he'll come to power, but now has decide between the 30 pieces of silver or the pound of flesh offers.

Really though. Finally - FINALLY - I get to enjoy that politics degree and abuse the connections formed way back then.
