The Comfort of Strangers by Ian McEwan.
One of his darker books.

Image

“Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends.
You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things: air, sleep, dreams, sea, the sky - all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.”
Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

Dr Finlay's Casebook, by A J Cronin.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

I have been really enjoying this, although the latest chapter on chimps gave me some nightmares. It discusses how some chimps fashion spears from branches and use them to pluck sleeping galagos from their sleeping quarters and eat them. My dreams last night were full of chimps at dinner parties spearing small mammals like olives.

I can't believe I hadn't read any Bukowski up until now. Anyway, this wasn't a bad place to begin!

I read that when it first came out Kev (a couple of years back). It's an amazing tale - truly inspiring.

I bought this book a while back, long before my Dad’s diagnosis. Once he got sick, I couldn’t face reading it as the subject matter was too close to home. I’m at my Dad’s at the moment and my sister had given him a copy.(she loved it). My dad is now reading it! So I suppose if he is managing to read it, then I ought to put my big girl pants on and read it too.

At the moment I’m reading Derek Jarman’s ‘Modern Nature’ which is gorgeous.
