CD's or CDs, 70's or 70s...?

Postby C » 08 Nov 2023, 17:13

'

I have 37 CD's/CDs

I was 35 years old in the 70's/70s

It seems straightforward to me, BUT....

In my case, it's arbitrary. I often can't make up my mind, but I have decided that I'll try to go with CD's and 90s, and stick to that.

Both are incorrect. It's '70s.

Well, so be it. But I prefer 70s, then.

There are no hard and fast rules. 70s is fine as are the other suggestions.

Some people regard the use of the apostrophe as a crime, but this distinguishes this term from an abbreviation where the 's' would also stand for something, if you get me.

Not in
The CD’s case was cracked.

But certainly in
I have many CDs

I think strictly speaking the apostrophe in years is to replace the first two numbers ie ‘67
And It should by a ‘closing’ apostrophe.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I've always used 70's and cd's (usually uncapitalized, although that's another issue). "cd's" is the only instance where I pluralize using an apostrophe + s that I can think of.

Depends if it’s American English or British English being spoken - fine if it’s the former.
