Old photos,, post cards, birthday cards etc

Postby Limpin' Jez McKenzie » 11 Aug 2023, 09:51

I was going through a box of old post cards, photos, biryhday cards, christmas cards etc

What do you do with this stuff?

Do you chuck them out?
Or keep them on the off-chance that your biographer will have an archive to review?
The same applies to post cards sent to me. I have a number I sent to my mum as well. Does posterity give a damn?
I even have post cards sent to my family by other people - are they history or trash?
A couple of times when I have been travelling for monhs I created books using photos and my journal notes. I can't see myself doing that for every holiday though.

Also a number of the photos include former girlfriends - they are part of my history of course, but I feel slightly odd keeping them - what's the best option?

As for greetings cards, I keep ones from my wife and son, thank you cards and leaving cards, but that's it. Even so it ia a reasonable pile.

Any views, comments or advice?

And this is just the hard copy stuff. I have thousands of digital photos on various devices, but that's a discussion for another day.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

The only thing I keep are cards with interesting arty type pictures on them.

Have thousands of photos stored on my computer or in the cloud somewhere which no one will ever look at when I cease to exist. Also have loads of old physical format photos that are never looked at and and I doubt that anyone will be interested in them, although my three children might find them fun when clearing out my things.

Most other things you mention are discarded.

I keep old cards for years, but eventually they go. Old photos are a different matter. When it gets to the point where you can't tell the xmas eves apart, perhaps it is time to discard some of them. The farther back in time you go, the fewer photos were taken, so I'll hang on to all the old bw photos.

Funny I just scared the guy at Best Buy. I bought two 5T external drives. He said isn't 2 or 3T enough. I have about 2T in photos and another 1T in music files. Really need to delete.

In regards to old family photos my brother did a great job so I've got his files and I have a bunch others around the home.
I do have a bookshelf of old photobooks, yearbooks, music memorabilia and other stuff. I have a box of postcards including a bunch I never used or sent out.
First project is get rid of my cd's.
