I think it's the European equivalent of wiring money direct to someone's bank account

That works with PayPal too, right? I know they can take money out of your bank account, I'm assuming they can also put money into your bank account...

Guess so, but it stays on your Paypal account until you make a transfer to your bank

PayPal works almost immediately. You'll get notified of any payment and can immediately transfer the money over using the app.
A Bacs- payment is a direct bank-to-bank payment system which can be in the form of a direct debit (you can draw money out of the others account) or credit (you can put money in the other account).

It’s the UKs inter bank transfer system.

It doesn't actually stand for anything.
In the late 70s/early 80s as banks began to mainly use computers for their operations, computer keyboards emitted an individual tone for each key. The developer of computerised interbank transfers was a huge fan of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, so he used the famous tones from John Williams's score for the code to send a transfer. Those tones corresponded to BACS on the keyboard (and you will recall that the third and fourth tones are the same though and octave different, so he only used four)..
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

Oh, that's splendid. Thanks, I love stuff like that.
For decades, the NBC radio and television networks in the US used a three note ident at the end of each program - like so:
Having grown up hearing that ident, I learned not so many years ago that the three notes were G-E-C because NBC was owned by General Electric Corporation.
Pardon my tangent.

Re: A beacon for Kath
Update on Kath:
Her retirement money is transferring to her bank it will take 30 days to clear but it's actually being transferred to her bank finally which makes her very happy because she's been waiting to hear that they are transferring it for a couple of weeks. She needs to vacate her current premises before it comes in, so she booked a short term stay at one of those extended stay hotels and can add additional weeks as she needs. She reserved a storage space close to the place she's getting kicked out of. She has spoken with SNAP and should be getting a grocery card to cover food soon. Next week we'll get her a post office box so that her mail can be forwarded to somewhere secure.
In her own words:
"I am of much calmer mind now that my (retirement) money is (eventually going to be deposited) in my bank, mwhaha. still needs til july 1st to clear, but it is there and it is mine. once i have a real place to live, i will apply for reap's social security. "
She and her son are surviving currently on the generosity of you beautiful music lovers alone and she wants everyone to know that your donations will hold her over until her retirement clears and for that and so much more and she's incredibly grateful.

Ah yes that old chestnut.
That derives from one of those situations where killjoys decide that the real origin is not appropriate or "dignified" for the business in question - in this case banking - so develop a plausible alternative. This was the early eighties after all.
Not quite the same, but in the mid-nineties some enterprising copy editor included in the index to a standard legal text called Woodfall on Landlord and Tenant Law an unusual item under the heading "Licence".
It read "Licence - kill, to .......007". One of these killjoys I mention ensured it was removed from subsequent editions.

So you are saying your version is true, but someone thought it frivolous and came up with the acronym ?
Just give one link that verifies this. If you can't and claim it's all been covered up you'll start to sound like a conspiracy theorist.
Edit: Also you say this dates from early eighties. The BACS acronym was introduced in 1971
