Basically a warm weather treat (no surorise). I have my favorites. But they are mostly local for the freshness and quality of the milk. Gelato in Italy was a minf blowing experience and it’s still my gold standard though ice in Germany when I was a kid was pretty great.

Ice cream made from skimmed milk and whey powder should be banned. All the cheap ones are like that.

I much prefer simple flavours of ice cream. Mackie's Clotted Cream, for example is simple but delicious. I'll second the Waitrose Lime & Coconut one too. My usual go-to is Yeo Valley mint choc chip, which tastes great and also has much less sugar than almost any other flavour I've seen.
He's a simpleton. 200 years ago they wouldn't have let him milk a cow.

I'm affronted by the way that 'vanilla' is a byword for all things boring, straight and unsophisticated.

Out of all the flavourings for ice cream vanilla is objectively the most exotic.

It comes from the seed pod of an orchid that only grows in the wild in places like Madagascar for fuck's sake!

Strawberry!? Fuck off :x

Strawberry flavor can fuck right off, on that we can agree. Not a fan of vanilla either.

A good, rich chocolate ice-cream is a wonderful thing.

Lemon sorbet is great too - completely different kind of food though.

I read somewhere that Ben -- or is it Jerry? - prefers mix-ins in his ice cream, so their company has very few plain flavors -- which, for the most part, I prefer. Cherry Garcia is vanilla with cherries and bits of chocolate mixed in.

They introduce and retire flavors all the time. Just about the time I find one I like, they rotate it out.

We can't, actually.

Vanilla is (I think still) the best-selling flavor by a good degree. Probably because in addition to being enjoyed as is, it's the most common base for sundaes, shakes, as an accompaniment to pie, and so on.

Back in my youth, raspberry ripple used to be a standard flavor, as available as chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and (yes) pistachio.

I've always wondered why it was pistachio that became the fourth basic flavor. And how do they get the green color?

Mix-ins suck, you can hardly taste the ice cream. Many years ago, we had a Steve's in Tokyo, I think it was a franchise of an American chain. You'd buy your basic ice cream, and then they'd mix in whatever you pointed at.

Me too. I'm happy with vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. Occassionally rum and raisin and, if I can get it, Cherry Garcia but I've not seen Ben and Jerry's ice cream in Hong Kong for years.

Americans don't get ice cream. Their idea of a good ice ceam is 2 packets of biscuits, a carton of popcorn and some bubble gum mixed in with icy water.

As with chocolate, where the higher percentage of cocoa beans you get, the better the taste, so with ice cream. Always check the percentage of cream; anything less than 40% - forget about it.

Steve's is crappy ice cream - believe awful soft ice cream similar to Dairy Queen and McDonalds.
The Modernist - don't lump all Americans into that crappy stuff.

Like I said prior I don't buy store bought ice cream anymore. Too many small ice cream shops in these parts that are better.
