What do you think Mochi is?

Postby Rorschach » 18 Mar 2021, 15:50

I only discovered something called a mochi very recently. They sell them in one of our local supermarkets and I eat far too many of them.
However, I just looked 'Mochi' up on Wikipedia and it's not the same thing as what I'm eating.
What we have is a squashed ball, a hemisphere if you will, of ice cream surrounded by some starchy, glutinous stuff. I have no idea what it's made of but it doesn't melt easily so you can hold it in your hand while you eat it. The real thing is apparently some kind of rice cake.

Which type of mochi, if any, are you familiar with?

I've noticed Natrel Mochi popping up in a few stores (Toronto) in the past few months but haven't picked up any .... yet.

It’s a glutinous rice dessert. I have two places to buy it within about a ten minute drive. One is an Asian grocer, the other a Japanese dessert shop that has been around for many decades. They sell ice cream and other desserts.
This is not the year to think about what we don’t have.
It is the year we should be grateful for what we do have.

We've got a small Japanese grocery around the corner from our house, and you can get trad mochi and mochi ice cream. I much prefer the mochi ice cream.

It's mochi ice cream, but that takes too long to say, so we've shortened it to just mochi. Nobody's going to know any different, and if they do they're just showing off. ;)

Fucking hell, dumb westerners. Know how Japanese rice is stickier than other rices? Mochi is japonioca pounded or kneaded until it is a glutinous mass. Japanese cooks then mold and flavor mochi into hundreds of shapes and dishes. I liken it to a harder sort of marshmallow. Sweet or savory, mochi is overall a very satisfying and versatile food.

Kinda but you missed the scale of how wonderful a food mochi is. I really love mochi. There is something about its gooey- chewy-stretchy texture which makes me smile, like whenever I am eating/gnawing some, melted in a red bean soup or toasted brown and mozzarella stretchy with a coating of sugar and soy sauce. Yes, as a coating for ice cream it is wonderful. Funnily we don't have that Mochi ice cream in Japan. But as a coating for daifuku, a dessert I am sure would make a millionaire of a good marketer in the west, mochi would be a boon. The varieties are endless.

Obviously I'm not familiar with the full range but there's a Japanese delicatessen not too far from where I live and they have a variety of mochis with various fillings. All very expensive and all sweet. I think it may be starting to catch on though.

In winter my favorite street food before my diet was Chikara or "POWER" Udon with croquettes. Udon itself is a fat and chewy white noodle and is usually laden into a simple savory dashi soup. What one adds to the noodle and soup mixture determines what kind of person you are. I liked it with two hunks of hot gooey mochi melted old school style in a microwave with a dunked in deep fried potato croquette to up the calories, thus the "power." That was a whole meal and used to cost about three and a half dollars.
