Homosexual acts between males were illegal in England and Wales until the 1967 Sexual Offences Act and not a moment too soon. Blackmailers never go away > bankruptcy. Careers damaged (perhaps lost) marriages and families broken up, booze and other substance use and abuse, self harm and suicide.
The movie Victim (1961), which I just found on UTube, was X rated and some footage cut before the UK censors passed it for public screening
British reviews praised Bogarde's performance as his best, and latterly his courage in taking the role as he was living in the same house as his male business manager and partner at the time and had been encouraged to be seen out in public, socialising with attractive young women.
