I'm increasingly pleased with the Biden/Harris ticket, though if they win, I dread the internecine battles that will inevitably follow. Though I have fully supported democrats taking a middle of the road approach to presidential elections since 2004 (though it does not align with my personal politics), I think it is now more important than ever. They have to be able to suck up every Obama voter who also voted for Trump, and then some, and I am more and more convinced that this is the right ticket to do it. If Trump is voted out, there will be such a mess to clear up that an old hand like Biden is the perfect person for the job. He knows the ropes, and can be a stabilizing figure.

OK so they have both been accused of sexual assaults - although I think Trump has about ten times the volume of complaints against him and is on record describing how he goes about the process of assaulting women.

And there, in a nutshell, is a perfect illustration of just how far the USA has sunk since Obama ... choosing between two sex offenders as president and favouring one because he isn't as rapey as the other.

Well, Biden comes across like a slightly over-affectionate creepy uncle while Trump is more your half-witted drooling rapey pervert with no self control. Chalk and cheese really.

I am beginning to get bad vibes about this. I'm not so sure that Biden isn't going to run the exact same race that Clinton did in 2016.... with similar results. He certainly represents almost exactly the same choice for those not prepared to scratch beneath the surface. I think Trump believes he can hold his 'base' and maybe even creep into some areas which may be beneficial for him. I'm not so sure Biden can do likewise. In the end, Democrats are voting against Trump in a huge amount of cases, not for Biden. That's not exactly a position of strength.

i sincerely hope I'm wrong but this is beginning to have eerily similar vibes to last time.

i sincerely hope yer wrong, too.

i have no idea how this will go, but i DO know one thing: hillary clinton was villified and made an evil witch choice for at least a few decades, in ways that just don't stick with biden. (i will leave off all talk of sexism and whatnot.)

seriously, the trumpian attempts to cast biden as some evil being just aren't stickin.

it matters.

we can only hope it will matter enough. sigh.

I don't know what's going to happen, but culturally, Biden presents a very different choice. First, I don't think that Trump is going to pick up any new votes from people who didn't vote for him the first time around, and it seems likely that not everyone who voted for him the first time will do it again. Also, don't underestimate the very deep, visceral hatred and distrust of HRC that simply isn't there with Biden. There are a lot of voters who were simply never going to vote for her, but Biden represents something different. People who were never going to pull the lever for HRC are likely to be much less turned off by Biden, who is famous for his attention to and connection with the fickle, blue collar, white voter who has historically voted for the winner, whether it be Reagan, (Bill) Clinton, W, Obama, or Trump. The political question is how effectively Trump can paint him as a Bernie Sanders socialist who is beholden to the surging left wing of the party. As George Bush I tarred Mike Dukakis as a "card carrying member of the ACLU." There are a lot of reasons why this playbook won't work as well in these times, but . . .

And I was wrong last time so . . .

I disagree it was sexism or just a general dislike of Hillary; it was the party's shitty game plan. Knowing there was some dislike for Hillary out there, Chuck Shumer said for every blue collar Dem who voted for Trump they'd pick up a larger number of white collar Republicans who'd vote for Hillary. Instead of giving Democrats what they want, i.e. free health care (a pony) they charged ahead with the status quo. That's the conservatives job! Meanwhile Trump campaigned like a Democrat promising the moon. And now with Biden promising masks and vaccines and not much more, guess who is going to promise health care again? Guess who I think is going to win (again)?
Question authority.

Eerily similar poll rankings, too.

The most recent Wall St Journal/NBC News poll puts the Orange Utang nine points behind Biden
- exactly the same shortfall he had to make up when he lagged behind Clinton in the same poll at
the same stage of the 2016 election.

Remember how all of us said there was no way the odious one would get in then? First at first the primaries,
then at the convention and finally at the election itself?

Then there's the shame factor in polls.

When you allow for poll respondents who'd never in a million years admit to intending to vote for Trump,
that nine-point gap is likely to narrow considerably.

Be afraid, be very afraid - especially if the Orange-faced buffoon manages to "win" the Orange State come
Election Day.

i agree with this, although i am not as worried about how they paint biden as i am about the exponentially-rabid, brazen and rampant cheating. that trump lackey jerkoff dismantling the us postal service from the inside, for example. trump is desperate to stay in office, becuz he knows what will happen to him when he is no longer president. he won't win over any new converts, but he quite obviously will pull out every stop to fucque up a free and fair election more than it has ever been fucqued before.

Exactly - he will do his best to steal it and if he loses will accuse the Democrats of stealing it.
Simply put, America and American democracy will not survive another 4 years of Trump.

And the Democrats would never cheat.

They are blowing this election on purpose because they want Trump in office. They raise far more money with Trump in office than with an ineffectual Biden stumbling around the Oval Office wondering where the corners are.

I think the difference between 2016 and now is about who has the momentum.

Last time Trump was the plucky outsider building that momentum as the campaign progressed, now the boot is on the other foot.

Despite the polls looking the same, the democrats have that momentum, they are the insurgents.

WHile (allegedly Sleepy) Joe looks alert and sparky, Trump looks tired and defeated. He's got nothing to offer either, no ideas, no agenda apart from his weird dictator's 'I can do whatever I want' manifesto.

After the 2018 election, the primary participation this year, the pandemic, economic bullshit and how Trump has not done one thing to expand his voting base... I don't see how he could possibly win this year. Unless he cheats. But even then, no pollster or pundit knows how large the turnout will be this year. I think it terrifies the Trump campaign that there will be millions of first-time voters this election. MILLIONS. It won't be a Reagan/Mondale landslide but it may look more like the Johnson/Goldwater landslide.

Trump barely won in 2016. The polls were right in 2016 and Trump won in the margin of error. He is not even close right now. A poll of likely voters this week put Biden at 53% nationwide. How can you win when over half want to vote for the other guy?

But sure, I get the pessimism. But holy shit, I have been through enough this year. I am not going to spend the next 3 months shitting rocks. Will Biden have a Dukakis-like slide? Sure, it's possible. But c'mon. Trump is fucking terrible and most in this country know that.

I'm rambling, but I got my unsolicited mail-in ballot request in the mail last week. It comes with a detailed FAQ sheet explaining how safe and easy it is to vote by mail. Most states are doing this. Many saw record participation in their primaries this year because of it! I am optimistic. This country sucks in many ways, but I don't think it wants full-on moron fascism. Many, sure, but not most.

No mystery about Trump this time around, and Biden isn’t Hillary.

Trump cannot possibly have gained supporters after what he has done but he sure as hell has lost a lot.
