Baseball 2020 (such as it is)

Postby toomanyhatz » 29 Jul 2020, 05:38

So the Dodgers just beat the 'stros. I'm a bit dubious that this season will make it to the end, but there's enough happening to be worth discussing. Although it's probably only two or three of us that care.

Anyway, predictions? How far will we make it? If we get to some form of WS, who do you like?

I hope that I'm wrong but I don't think that we'll have or make it to the "All Star Break" my husband and some of our friends think that the season will end with many double headers.

I'm a Blue Jays fan and like their chances. I don't know about the WS this year.

*I hate that the Jays traded Kevin Pillar, Eric Sogard, Justin Smoak and Freddy Galvis :x It will take me a very long time to get over these and a few other recent trades/waivers/etc.

I'm sitting this one out.
MLB probably should have as well.

Same.

I might watch the Leafs "home opener" tonight, but I'm not getting invested in it. (hockey, that is - sorry to hijack)

Agree with Baron, and Harv, I'm exactly the same with my Habs. Will not be going out of my way to see any of the action. The weather is constantly in the mid-high 30s now. Not hockey weather.

As for baseball, bring back my Expos and I might start caring again.

Thought baseball would have a chance since as a team sport goes its the most social distancing. However, after the Marlins disastrous number of players with Covid I'm guessing we will not be able to complete the season. It came out that the Marlins player were out partying and most likely got it then. This is the problem the team has no control on its players and I'm sure their are plenty that think this Virus can't stop them from partying.

As a Yankee fan I'll watch but don't give it much a chance of them playing a whole season(short).

The Blue Jays settled on Buffalo's Sahlen Field as their 2020 digs after Rogers Centre was ruled out and attempts to share a big-league ballpark proved fruitless. The team said goodbye to the Ontario capital three weeks ago. Now it's time to say hello to its temporary home in the Queen City.

The Jays hit seven home runs on Wednesday evening (their second game at home in Buffalo) and lost to the Marlins 14 - 11 :(

I'm loving El Nino tearing it up. We still remain an average team and won't win anything. Its the only sport I'm watching apart from the cricket.

One good thing coming of this debacle of a season is the number of players from baseball families cementing their reputation as superstars. Not just Tatis, but Mike Yastrzemski, Bo Bichette (Mondesi and Biggio struggling a bit right now, but I think they'll be there in time).

If they don't ruin it with stupid rule changes and reducing everything to "metrics," the game could be in pretty good shape for a while.

I'm happy that the Blue Jays won last night 12 - 4 with six home runs. Rowdy Tellez, Randall Grichuk, Cav Biggio and Bo Bichette hit one each. Teoscar Hernandez hit two. The player who is currently struggling on the Jays is Vlad Guerrero, Jr.

I still hate it that they traded Pillar, Smoak, Sogard, Galvis, Martn, etc. but who am I? :)

In last night's "Battle of the Birds" the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 7 - 2.

Cav Biggio went 3 for 5 with a three run homer. :D

Randal Grichuk went 2 for 5 with a home run a 4 RBIs.

Unfortunately, we lost Rowdy Tellez Toronto Blue Jays slugger Rowdy Tellez has entered concussion protocol after taking an elbow to the face in Monday's win over the Baltimore Orioles. The incident occurred in the seventh inning, when Tellez took contact from Renato Nunez while reaching into the base-path to make a defensive play.16 hours ago

The Blue Jays won their double header against Philly yesterday, partly because of Rowdy Tellez's bat. :D

Randal Grichuk ended his home run streak. :(

The playoffs are going to be particularly weird. More than half the teams in the postseason? Ridiculous.

Speaking of ridiculous, the free "runner on second" rule for this year is really, really stupid. I hope they ditch it. It doesn't do what it was intended to do, which is speed up the game. Instead it's just made it easier to score one run, so both teams do it, and the game goes on.

And instead of relief pitchers occasionally having a nice clean, easy inning, they have to work harder, contending with a runner in scoring position that they had nothing to do with.

Most of the new rules are stupid (though I like the minimum 3-batter rule for relief pitchers, which does eliminate all the ridiculous 'a different pitcher for every new batter' nonsense that goes on sometimes), but that one takes the cake.
