Go on - tell us you broadband speeds

Postby C » 18 May 2020, 20:05

From the Ofcom Report 2019 [May 2019 {2020 report imminent??}]

The national UK telecoms regulator's 2019 study of fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, reports that the average download rate has risen from 46.2Mbps last year to 54.2Mbps now and uploads 7.2Mbps (up from 6.2Mbps). But the gap between urban and rural areas has worsened

I was shocked today that my brother who lives in the north of England (Appleby, Cumbria) has a download speed of 39.8Mbps. That's a lot worse than the UK average [His upload speed was much better 9.7Mbps]

My speeds, I live in the Kent [south of London], are very good I know:

Tonight: download 108.38; upload 10.05

So, how do you compare?

What about our friends across the pond and elsewhere?

If I told you, I'd have to kill you .. :o

I'll check later if you still want me to do so. :D

For Wi-fi, 24.9 and 9.5

I learned something very interesting - in my small room, I have broadband, Firestick, mobile, and two computers. When I turned off all but the laptop, the response rate of the test increased by 40%.

I suspected as much, but that is a real eye-opener.

That makes a big difference.

We have 25 devices in our house.

The routers that BT, Virgin etc provide are not up to multi- simultaneous usage.

The basic routers allocate date to devices in a different way to the more elaborate ones.

I have just installed a Netgear Nighthawk X6S AC4000 which can handle 55 devices.

Within minutes my sons commented on the improvement.

It doesn't increase the speed it just allocates data to each device simultaneously and according to need

I am no expert, far from it, but I have done a bit of homework over the last week.

Pathetic download, mine is 108.3- read the article. the UK average, in 2019, is 54.2 twice the speed of yours!

It's a conspiracy Jimbo - somebody is watching you....!

That you have extremely fast broadband

So streaming Netflix/Hi Res music [ via say Qobuz] etc shouldn't be an issue for you with drop out/freezing/disconnection

However, the key thing linked to the speed is the amount of devices you have within the household

A decent router that can cope with multiple devices simultaneously helps

Ours is truly pathetic.

Download speed
5.9 Mbps
Upload speed
0.3 Mbps

And it will be much worse when Liam plugs in for the day - as his language lets me know. It also drops completely when the weather is bad.
