Critically thinking about the corona virus

Postby Jimbo » 30 Mar 2020, 16:44

A thread for those who may think, "Hold on there a sec ..." The cartoon below pretty much says how I feel re the over-reaction by the media. Or do you think that the media is getting the story right?

Yeah, really. I contend the reaction, the crushing of the economy, the unemployment, the political oppression, the looting of our treasuries all in the name of the virus is unwarranted.

Especially when we see 158,000 patients have fully recovered.

Then compare your 35,000 deaths to the 3,202,825 communicable disease deaths in the world this year. Stop the world, man. People are dying from diseases we give to each other.

Check out Worldmeter to get some perspective, to get your critical mind functioning.

119,955 Seasonal flu deaths this year
414,785 Deaths caused by HIV/AIDS
2,026,465 Deaths caused by cancer this year

If we tamp down the overreaction we can go back to our jobs and lives and live pretty much as riskily as before.

Have you seen his other posts on the subject? This should come as no surprise.

I even composed a long response to one and then thought "what's the point?"

Even Trump is (reluctantly) embracing the actual facts now. As are all Jimbo's "sources." (Though of course they're careful to inform us that Trump is no worse than everyone else that doesn't embrace their worldview.)

He's still referring to it as a seasonal flu last I saw. What can I possibly say that'll let any light in?

I'm immune to his Jimbo ramblings without actually putting him on BCB Ignore, which would be a shame. I just scoot through it.

For the sake of argument. It's good for the brain. I have been following the matter on the surface and also from the rabbit hole so I think I have a wide handle to argue. Plus I am angry because while I know no one who has the illness I have good friends and family members who are losing their livelihoods over this illness - which IS comparable to a seasonal flu.

What argument? You have complete immunity to reason.

We are trying the quarantine/shut down solution now, and trying to save as much of the economy and job market as possible with massive government aid packages. In the western world, only Sweden has taken a different approach and is going on with business as usual.

Sweden's population is 9-10 million, Denmark's is 5.8 million, so you'd think that Sweden would have twice the number of deaths, or even more, a lot more. But that is not the case. The death rates are similar to Denmark's, even though Sweden's economy and social infrastructure is weaker than Denmark's.

If this pandemic carries on for months and months, there will come a breaking point, where you have to get the wheels turning again to avoid complete collapse. But I think Trump is too hasty announcing a return to normal in two weeks.

An alternative approach would be to isolate the people at risk as early as possible and throughout the pandemic, the elderly and people with chronic diseases (like me). But in order for that to work, it would require immediate action, and that is too late for all of us now.

However, this corona virus is likely to return. And perhaps in the future, there will be other viruses. We can only afford massive aid packages this once, for the foreseeable future. What if the whole thing repeats itself in the fall or winter?

No, you have an immunity to critical thought. You think I pulled that bit about the similarity to flu from my butt? Yeah, there are differences but the article below says washing your hands and throwing away tissues should prevent infection. That's less drastic than what this overreaction has wrought.

Similarities and differences – COVID-19 and influenza

Q. How are COVID-19 and influenza viruses similar?

Firstly, COVID-19 and influenza viruses are similar They both cause respiratory disease, which can be asymptomatic or mild but can also cause severe disease and death. Secondly, both viruses are transmitted by contact or droplets. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue), are important actions that everyone can take to prevent both infections.

Hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue) are important before touching food.

Therefore COVID-19 and eating lunch are similar.

Again, there aren't enough 's in the world.

Are you kidding? I show you a real world, non-conspiracy article which says simply washing hands and chucking away tissues is good practice and can prevent a deadly infection and you poo poo the advice. Closing restaurants and bars, shutting down travel, all this disruption we are all suffering through is not mentioned as a measure.

Sounds like you've covered all the angles there, matey. Why not push the envelope a little further and then set it down on the stoop and see if the cat licks it up?

There's no need to rush. Couple of weeks should do it.

I have a horrible feeling that it'll be round about then that those of us who are still here will be desperately in need of one of your gargantuan servings of witlessness.

I don’t think Jimbo is right but there is merit in some of what he says.

What happens when the next one comes around as it surely will one day?

Hopefully this one is going to change the world for the better and result in better prevention measures, better preparations and more focus on / regard for the lower paid health professionals the world over but particularly in the U.K.
