What are your favorite brands of jeans?

Postby Flower » 26 Feb 2020, 16:24

When I was very young, my father would wear Lee Brand Jeans and of course, I only wanted to wear Lees or Wrangler Brand Jeans. As a teen, I would purchase Landlubber Brand while most of my friends wore Levi's which were a couple of bucks cheaper.

Moving up to the "designer" jean craze. I mainly wore Faded Glory or Calvin Klein Jeans.

Leaving the "designer" brands behind, I mainly bought Fiorucci Jeans. I loved Fiorucci (the store) and almost never failed to shop there after roaming around Bloomingdale's before heading to the West Village.

Moving out of New York, I fell in love with Edwin Jeans. I still wear them with love as I do my very faded Edwin Jean jackets.

Alas, I've come almost full cycle and usually pick up Levi's as Edwin Jeans have become harder to find.

So, what jeans do you wear and do you have a "jean "story"?

Back in the 70s and 80s I used to buy cheap jeans from a place called Dirty Dick's in Stratford, London. The brands were Lee or Wranglers, but they were dirt cheap. After that for 10 years or more I owned no jeans at all. Then in '97 or '98 I was wandering around Chester with my then girlfriend, and she encouraged me to try on some Paul Smith jeans. They were the softest denim ever, and fitted me perfectly (I have a smallish waist, but soccer player's thighs, so "slim fit" never works). I have only bought Paul Smith jeans since then. However I do not pay full price. Near where I used to work in the City of London is ( or was) a Paul Smith shop that sells seconds and ends of line stuff, much discounted.

I only really wear Levi’s these days.
My teenage daughter asked me if I’d deliberately frayed them at the heals yesterday. I said no,they just go like that with wear.

In an awestruck voice she said ‘Sick!’

I was a Levi guy since high school but in recent years I have switched to Wranglers. Levis are too au currant for me. Trying to find jeans that don't hug the pube line are gettng more difficult and the sheer variety the company makes is mind numbing. I found Wranglers easier to navigate and they are cheaper than Levis so win-win.

In high school I took an art class that taught us how to embrodier which I applied to my jeans. I did a big Woodstock icon on the lower leg and also did stuff to the belt loops and pocket rims. I don't know what happened to those jeans.

I don't get why people purchase jeans with rips in the legs.

When Guess and those other designer jeans arrived on the market I was surprised they got any traction. I thought, who would buy these things? What do they have that Levis don't? Silly me!

501s.

Coincidentally I am going through a jeans thing at this moment because I have lost a few inches off my waistline. Going through the depository of old clothes my wife pulled out a battered and frayed pair of 501s and they fit perfectly! But with a hole in the crotch and other indicators they'd not stand up well to more washes I brought them to a tailor shop. I envisioned them patched up with kimono scraps - which is a thing - the shop said they didn't do that unless I brought the scraps in myself. So I said I wanted them patched so they'd be as close to new as possible. The lady said they'd call me with the price. Well she called yesterday and they want 20,000 yen which is about $200. Ridiculous, of course. But that fit ....

Anyone else noticing the spate of stretch jeans in the shops these days? I needed trousers, so at the Gap I did buy some corduroy jeans, which don't stretch, and a pair of blue jeans which I dare not call denim. Does denim stretch like the old ski pants with the stirrups on the bottom? I think not. But they do fit and I haven't had such tight jeans since high school.

I had friends who, both on "teen tours" and hitching around Europe in the Summers between high school and university, etc., that sold their Levi's to Europeans for almost ten times what they paid. for them in the States. People would go up to them and offer to purchase them. A couple of my friends wired their parents and told them that they lost their luggage and for the parents to send more Levis. :D

Levis. I have a pair on now

I remember many years ago asking my mum for a pair of Levis but she said they were too expensive.

They were £4 and it was 1966 and I was 13

Definitely Levi's.
However I haven't bought a pair in years as they've got ridiculously expensive in the UK. I refuse to pay to pay those prices. I'll just go to TJ Maxx and go through the racks until I find something I like. I look for:
- Good thickness of denim. Not always easy to find as jeans these days are often made from much thinner denim.
- An even dye. None of this artificially faded at the kneecaps malarky for me.
- A good cut. Avoid ones that are cut tightly below the knee. Middle aged men look ridiculous in them, as if they should be wearing jester shoes to go with them!
I ain't bothered about the label.

I've worn slim-fitting jeans for almost my whole life starting in high school when I would get my mom to taper the black 501's that were my preferred brand.

Nowadays I wear Turkish-made Mavi Jeans, with a plain dark blue dye. They have a bit of stretch to them, and only last about a year, so I'm thinking about switching to a new brand - something made with proper denim that will last longer. I'm with Moddie regarding jeans with pre-faded shit and I'll go further by adding that ANY embellishment is unacceptable - even the stitching across the back pockets has to be as minimal and unobtrusive as possible.
If you've got nothing to do, don't do it here.

I agree, the price of Levi's in the States is outrageous. I love TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Winners, etc. that discount. I've discovered many bargains. I once found eighty dollar jeans at Banana Republic that were finally reduced to $10.00 USD. i tried them on and they were a nice fit with a good thickness. The only "problem was that there were only two pairs in my size, so I scooped them both up.

I'm not bothered by the label either.

A rather portly middle aged guy moved on our block a few years ago. He only wears jeans that are tightly cut below the knee. We all call him Tweedle Dee or Tweedle Dum. Not a good look for the portly middle aged gents. :)

501s on Japan's Amazon site were about $100 US and on the US's Amazon about $50. I tried to order a pair from the US but was informed they wouldn't send them to Japan. My sister is coming in April so I will send the pair to her and ask that she bring them when she comes.

Not too long ago I used to buy them at Sears for about $30 a pair. Those days are gone I guess.

This store was once called "RobinHood Army & Navy Surplus" it was formerly in the town where my parents moved when I was twelve years old. It was the place that most kids went for school supplies, jeans, peacoats, Keds, etc. At some point, long after I moved, it went a bit upscale and then relocated to another town on Long Island. This was the place for cheap Levi's too. No customer service, the dressing rooms were sort of boths in the middle of the store with khaki curtains around them. I miss places like Robinhood's.

*On a personal note .. Is your sister bringing Pam with her when she comes to visit or just canned porn .. err .. corn?

Up until and through the sixth grade, my parents would buy me a couple of pairs of Lee jeans and/or Wrangler jeans at the start of the school year. Every Spring, these jeans would be cut down to shorts, mainly because of holes in the knees.
