Pollock is a poor man's cod

Postby GoogaMooga » 27 Jan 2020, 21:13

I had breaded pollock tonight. Zilth Pilchards says it's a poor man's cod. I think he's right, it's not nearly as good as cod. I've got a second fillet left to fry, but I don't feel like it. I am not wealthy, but I think I can do better than pollock.

This is what pollock does to your mind:

Mabe you should do something else with it instead of breading and frying it. What makes it a poor man's anything? Flavor? Texture? I haven't eaten a lot of pollock in my life and it's been a very long time since I knowingly did so I'm curious. My guess is it isn't the pollock's fault. :P

I'd say texture. It's tougher, coarser. Apparently it is the most fished fish, so somebody's eating it. I'd just rather have cod.

I've been snacking on fake crab as part of my diet. Cheaper and nearly as good as the real thing.

Pollock is delicious. We caught it fresh out of the bay in St Kilda and as soon as we landed got the chef to either grill it there and then or BBQ in some foil with butter and seaweed. Why would you chuck breadcrumbs on it? They will negate the true flavour.

Bought it frozen like that. I am a lazy cook, never prepare anything from scratch.

When C was a child, cod were so numerous that brave "cod walkers" would "walk" from Bedford, England to New Bedford, Massachusetts stepping on and off the slippery backs of Atlantic cods.

Agree not even close to the real fresh crab meat.

You are right to have it in this discussion as most fake crab is made from Pollack.

"Pollock, which has a mild color and odor, is commonly used to make surimi (fake crab). This fish is also used to make fish sticks and other breaded fish products"

Not sure the last time I've had Pollack but don't remember it being that bad if made right - I would grill it.

I like a lot of Highliner products but haven't tried the "fish wings" .. yet.
