What is the matter with the Sydney/New South Wales authorities ?!

Sydney fireworks: Thousands sign petition to halt 'traumatic' show.

The biggest fires are raging near the city of Sydney in New South Wales, the worst-affected state with nearly 100 fires burning, where more than a quarter of a million people have signed a petition calling for the New Year's Eve fireworks to be cancelled.

Sydney's Lord Mayor, Clover Moore. Consider your resignation.

Just say what you mean. It's all about the money.

The expensive refunds to ticket holders, loss of tourist revenue in hotels, bars and restaurants, fines from contractual obligations dishonoured.

If the fireworks don't actually spark more fires they might as well go ahead.

So why has every other planned display all over Australia been shelved ?

It's a matter of sensitivity as much as risk.

I don't know what the news coverage has been like in Japan, or how much you can view free to read, but I can hardly believe what I'm reading and seeing - actually I find it almost nearly impossible to look at the still photos and I won't view any taped video footage.
Edit: I watched the short clip (crew of Fire and Rescue NSW Station 509 Wyoming) - I'm not going to post it here - that's all over general and social media today, at one of my Oz cousin's behest. Absolutely stupefying.

Next year they could do a Shanghai and use drones - there is some great footage on youtube.

In the US we don't do fireworks on NYE but they do in Holland where I spent some time a while back. There was talk then of how much money Hollanders spend on NYE fireworks and how much better it could be spent than on these "fire flowers", as the Japanese call fireworks. I wonder if the deep thinking Dutch still waste their hard earned guilders on these trivial nothings on NYE.
