Recreational heroin use
Very infrequently I think about what heroin feels like and even more infrequently I wonder if there would ever be a time in my life when it would be time to have one attempt at it, just to find out. I've had friends who took it in their twenties who are now clean but when they were on it, they were pretty insufferable and difficult to rouse from the couch, which doesn't seem the sort of effect that seems worth it to me. I have known a few people who have taken it once every few years or so, and seemed to enjoy it well enough. It strikes me that the ability to take it successfully and not get hooked is so multifactorial that I probably wouldn't chance it, but even so the ridiculous rock n roll mystique of lying on a bed in NY grinning with a fan whirring is an appealing visual. I have known enough people professionally and personally at the opposite end of the smack -is-sexy spectrum to make me think I should feel guilty for even thinking about it in casual terms - an entire Leeds house full of my friends dead in 1989 for a start.
Do you ever think about it?

No. I'm perfectly okay with knowing that there's something out there that feels incredible enough that people get addicted to it and knowing that I'll never try it. It's a long list, I'm sure.
Rolling Stone's new advice columnist was asked about this very thing recently. He's a terrible advice-giver on many topics, but he has quite a bit of first-hand knowledge of this one:

That's weird - I'm sure I never signed up with them!

I’ll just have an Everything Bagel, thanks.

There’s no law that says you can’t have heroin AND bagels! It’s not either or!

Admit it, though - a bagel doesn't really go with your "lying on a bed in NY grinning with a fan whirring" visual appeal scenario, does it?

I am strongly opposed to eating food in bed.
Particularly an Everything Bagel. That would be a disaster.

It was all around me when I was a pot/LSD head and a few good friends got hooked. I know from experiencing legal medical narcotics how strong - and wonderful - that shit can be. If ever I am in pain again I hope they hit me up again.
From a conspiratorial POV, how the fuck does that shit get manufactured and sold so openly on our streets? I think our authorities are paid to allow it.

Re: Recreational heroin use
There's a reason people are willing to do just about anything to do it. I jokingly tell people that when I was on my legal version I could sit in a room of a house on fire and not care. Everything is fine, just fine. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go through kicking a 12 year habit though. It is easily the hardest thing I've ever done. While I think some people could dabble, it would be a slippery slope for many.

Re: Recreational heroin use
When I had a big op last year I was looking forward to having proper drugs.
I was on a fentanyl drip in the ICU. I had a button which dispensed the drug - which is the industrial strength H that kills people on the street.
I overdid it and made myself sick but the beauty of opioids is that you couldn’t give a toss
Otherwise I wasn’t very impressed it just made me very woozy and dizzy but I wasn’t really in any condition to savour the experience to be fair.
I have known a couple of addicts well, well enough to not be interested in doing it recreationally. Both are dead now. One of them lived on the street - not very glam.
And fentanyl wasn’t a patch on the general amnesiac I had before an earlier op, that was very moreish - I was very impressed with that one.

I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I was basically hoping it would give me hipbones and, at last, an appreciation of ‘Metal Music’ but I’m sure that would take more than a Sunday afternoon of decadence.

Never done anything other than weed, but yes, I share your “curiosity” (if that’s what it is).
Never will try it though, of that I am 100% certain. Too scared basically. Or sensible.

Re: Recreational heroin use
Procuring heroin on the black market is tantamount to playing Russian Roulette, since it's routinely adulterated with the much more powerful drug Fentanyl and you're therefore trusting an anonymous criminal conspiracy to perform exceedingly fine mixing, weighing and measuring, which, if done wrong, kills you.
Stick with pharmaceuticals for recreational drug experimentation, would be my advice.
Intravenous Dilaudid is the best I've ever had. I was given it during a particularly gnarly medical procedure and I instantly went from abject suffering to feeling like my brain was having an orgasm. That's good medicine!

Try hyperventilation.
Squat down and take ten really deep breaths. Hold the tenth breath and stand up. The Baron, standing right behind you, will wrap his arms around your chest and squeeze until you pass out. He will lay you on the bed where you will awake in a matter of seconds having had yourself a mighty powerful braingasm.
