Doesn’t it depend on which side of the Medway you’re from?
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Arcane local Kentish thing.

If you are born west of the Medway you are a Man of Kent and if born to the East, a Kentish Man - or vice versa.

I worked there for years and still don’t know which.

West Kentish Man - east Man (or Maid) of Kent

[incidentally, Kent is not an island as the image suggests..!]

I love seeing Rochester castle as I cross the Medway. And what an ace castle it is!

Although many of my family live in Kent and I certainly used to love the place when my dad lived in South London, I now find it hard to love or even like. Perhaps it's because I schlepped up there every day from Brighton/Sussex to work for a decade, mainly to the deeply unlovely Swanley (picture a 60s sink estate next to the M25 smelling of onions). And then worked for a publishing company based in a crumbling Dickensian ex-department store overlooking the Medway (it used to flood regularly and was infested with rats) on the Rochester/Chatham border. The last time I was back in the area I was very nearly assaulted in a road rage incident - I honked a guy who cut me up at some lights near Sevenoaks and he started to exit his car presumably to 'sort me out'; fortunately his passenger pulled him back in.

While you see the Downs, the fruit blossoms, the oast houses and the charming country pubs, I smell the stink of the Aylesford paper mill, the seedy Chatham sex shops and bookies... and the pervasive essence of Farage.

Yes I have 'complex' emotions when it comes to Kent.

Rochester has really got a lot going for it these days. It's always had the history and location of course, but now its full of craft shops, cafes, independent shops..it's wonderful, I was there a few weeks ago. I'd love to live there.
Kent has always had something quite industrial and gritty about it, but I like that about it. We can leave the 'quaint' to the other home counties. :D
I probably love the coastal towns in Kent most of all though.
You're right about Swanley ..it's pretty grim!

Lots of seaside Kentish towns are being gentrified.

Deal is lovely. I live in Tunbridge Wells, which is lovely, but is on the border with East Sussex.
