Alexa type "home helps" - anyone here got or getting one?

Postby caramba » 11 Mar 2019, 09:18

It's a big 'nein danke' from me, I'm afraid. The likes of google, amazon et al are already able to harvest quite enough of my personal data without them gaining a foothold in my living room.

Anyone here got - or thinking of getting - one?

I've got an Alexa. Actually, it was my wife who ordered one, which given her general antipathy towards tech and gadgets was really strange. I wouldn't really put it in he "home help" category, it's more just a really good quality speaker for streaming music while in the kitchen. The most 'home helpful' thing it does, is set a timer to help when cooking.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Microwave technology - anyone here got or getting it?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

And yet ere you are spreading what you imagine passes as sunshine and laughter all day every day!

No.

My seven year-old was on my phone the other evening, verbally cajoling Google into telling her jokes, which was making me really uneasy.

Almost time to start setting up the dreaded "parental controls." :|

We have an echo spot and an echo dot. We play music, check facts etc. My son did his homework the other day by asking alexa questions (how far is lagos from london). We also have a blue tooth light bulb, so can tell alexa to turn on the light - it will even do this while we are away.

My dad didn't want us to have a microwave for years and years because he thought it'd give us cancer. I should sign him up here really.

yes I've got Ms Alexa. I only use it to turn off lights, keep time when cooking, turn up/down the volume and when I'm lazy to play music or change song.

I won an Echo in a raffle but was too creeped out to set it up. It became a popular item at that years white elephant exchange. I don't have any smart appliances, I do have a nice portable speaker, don't need no echo
