WANKER OR TOSSER

Postby Still Baron » 14 Feb 2019, 15:18

Help me, BCB. Though my understanding of British English is nearly fluent, it is not my mother tongue, so there will always be slight distinctions, implications, connotations, and other subtleties I don’t quite get.

So please educate me on the niceties of these two terms, which I understand to be similar. I hesitated in using either to describe Ryan Adams because I am not British and because I did not want to praise him too highly. And yet, those were the words that were in my head.

My hunch is that a tosser is even more inconsequential and boring than a wanker, but I really don’t totally know. Examples and further discussion would be most welcome. Thank you.

They basically mean the same thing, but 'wanker' has more aggressive connotations in its usage and is seen as more of a traditional swear word. Tosser is milder, though still hugely uncomplimentary of course. But they are interchangeable to a certain extent, you could change one for the other and retain much the same meaning.

I think Tosser suggests a certain casual ambivalence whereas Wanker is used when somebody has annoyed you on a more visceral level.

- some tosser jumped the queue for the bus today

- some wanker was handing out BNP leaflets down the high street today

That's true, but I think wanker is used so casually these days that the distinction is almost disappearing. You might just as easily say "some wanker jumped the queue..." and no one would bat an eyelid, they wouldn't think "God that person must've really annoyed you".

"Wanker & Tosser" should be like "Goofus & Gallant".

"Wanker bosses his friends" etc..

You can express a certain warmth when referring to a friend as a wanker. Tosser less so.

Where's your sense of humour my dear friend?

You wouldn't want to give the impression that you only dish it out but can't take it.

Nay, my esteemed friend, you wouldn't want to give the impression that you only dish it out but can't take it

A wanker is someone you can grudgingly respect, even if you don't like them . It's as if they've potentially demonstrated a Ievel of ability or skill to maybe outwit you. "Oh that wanker just overtook me!"

Whereas a tosser is someone you forget in about 5 seconds.

"Who's that tosser?"

Labour voters are tossers while the Slider is a wanker.
