Hugh McIlvanney RIP

Postby Powehi » 25 Jan 2019, 18:12

Probably the finest and most versatile British sports writer of the last 50 years.

Wonderful crafter of sentences and memorable turns of phrase.

Said of Frank Bruno: "He was no more competitive than a sheep in an abbatoir".

More poignant still were the final few lines of his piece about the late Welsh boxer Johnny Owen: "Boxing gave Johnny Own his one positive means of self expression...It was his tragedy that he found himself articulate in such a dangerous language".

If you love sports or writing, you really ought to check out McIlvanney on Football or McIlvanney on Boxing

Massive tribute to Mr McI with loads of boxing, footie, racing and golf pieces in this morning's Sunday Times online. Would imagine will also be available with the dead tree version if anyone is interested.
