Ever since drones entered our visual lexicon as things that could be up in the sky, move about and have lights on, whatever natural visual phenomenon that people did not understand and processed as, first, gods and monsters, then, as techonology advanced, celestial chariots, birdmen, airships, planes and spacecraft, was bound to be put on them sooner or later. Or there could have been an actual drone the first time and all the returns were about hyper-vigilant people literally seeing things that weren't 'there'.
