I've never been to either, strangely enough, I thought I'd been to most places in northern England and Wales. That looks like an artist's impression of a dream of Workington as paradise though, it must be grimmer than that. My nickname at school for a while was Tydfil (because my surname's Mercer).
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I have a sneaking suspicion that's the best photo of Workington and the worst photo of Merthyr Tydfil you could find John

Workington absolutely DOES look like that in the centre on a Saturday!

but yeah - maybe that's not the best pic of Merthyr...

What's with the giant magnifying glass? Is it for locals to light their cigarettes with on sunny days?

It is no different than here down under having towns boasting about being the home of the Big Banana or Big Pineapple.....

So basically it is the Reds vs the Martyrs. I never could stand a martyr, especially a self-pronounced one. Workington it is then.
