San Jose, CA or San Jose, Costa Rica?
If it's San Jose, CA, I'd choose Harrogate. And I don't know anything about it.

I know the way to Harrogate.
And, I’ll be going there at Christmas to visit friends.

I've heard San Jose is a bit of a dump, but I've also heard that Harrogate is full of people taking baths all the time, so I can't decide.

And I know San Jose fairly well. I am a graduate and alumnus of San Jose State University, situated in the wasteland that is San Jose's downtown.
If you like Vietnamese or Mexican food, it's great. Or you want to work for Adobe software. Besides that, there's not much going for it.

Erstwhile poster, Slangking, used to work for San Jose's convention center or something like that, if I remember right.
He, T. Willy Rye and I once met up for a San Jose Giants minor league baseball game. The stadium was a WWII WPA project.

My parents live in San Jose. It's awful.

I can't say much about San Jose, I work with some people who work there, and for somewhere that's meant to be the tech capital of the world, they come across as a bunch of shysters and fuckwits.
Harrogate, however, I've been to a few times. I'd say it's slightly overrated in the lovely northern town stakes; it's a pretentious Skipton, if anything. Some posh shops and tea rooms do not make up for that horrible row of red-brick charity shops.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

The Winchester Mystery House is pretty cool.
When you traveled up and down California highways as a kid, there were two or three tourist destinations always advertised on billboards.

I have been to both places and I'll take Harrogate, thanks. It's "nice," but I suspect that ultimately it's one of the more boring places in England. Still, I'd welcome a trip through there again.

I was looking up Harrogate to see what it's like. According to Wikipedia, in 2012 they had the highest concentration of drink drivers in the UK.
I assume that's the same as driving under the influence here.
