Re: Pittsburgh vs Swindon
are we supposed to vote for the best or the shittiest?
I've been to Swindon, you know, and it doesn't all look that good.

I've heard Pissburgh is a nice place, but I have a high-school friend who grew up in Swindon, so I can't decide.

Pittsburgh has always been listed as a nice city to live, but western Pennsylvania, in general, is the pits.

Re: Pittsburgh vs Swindon
I spent a nice few days in Pittsburg visiting PPG. Surprisingly charming... unlike the unlovely Swindon. Nice countryside around Swindon though, Vale of the White Horse, Marlborough Downs and all that.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

I went to Swindon twice. Struck me as a tediously average English town. Too many roundabouts was my main impression, just blandly pleasant. Also, the football ground had at the time had no roof over the away end.
Never been to Pittsburgh. But I love the Steelers so it gets my vote.

Steelers play the Raiders this Sunday. Man, that match up ain't what it used to be.

Re: Pittsburgh vs Swindon
When I was a child, Pittsburgh was known to me for their fearsome football team. They were fucking badass. I didn't understand the intricacies of sports well enough to figure out that their success was detrimental to my team's success, since they were in the same league. It seemed like a perpetually cold, foggy place.
When I was about 17, my dad and I flew into Pittsburgh to drive to other places. But I was immediately struck by how pretty it actually was. It's a really striking city with the rivers converging downtown, and not nearly as monolithically sooty as I had imagined (Baltimore fit that bill). I would very much like to go back and check it out further. I gathering it is suffering/benefitting from hipster gentrification, but how hip can Pittsburgh really get? Ultimately, it's in a dark corner of the country (from my perspective).
So it's Mr. Rogers against XTC, right?
