Frankenstein at 200

Frankenstein at 200: First science fiction? First Gothic? First horror? It's been 200 years since the publication of Mary Shelley's novel, "Frankenstein". To commemorate that milestone, there will be a series of readings of Shelley's novel around the world on Halloween night 2018.

I never read the book. It was on my college reading list. I assumed it would be flowery and mannered writing when I prefer more modern punchy writing. If I read it now will I like it in the "hey this is a better than I thought" way?

Young Frankenstein is my choice. I love how it made my wife laugh, especially the "Putting On The Ritz" scene and how we can reference the movie to make jokes.

Like you, I never read the book, but it's probably one for the bucket list. YF is excellent, best thing Mel Brooks ever did.

I've read the book, and to be honest I prefer the hokey horror version. In the book, Frankenstein's monster is essentially Morrissey moping about the place whining on in florid terms about how he'll never be loved, albeit because of his horrible countenance, rather than his adenoidal vocals.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Oh, there must be fifty-odd pop culture representations. Robert De Niro, anyone? ;)

Frankly "Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein" is where I think the "fellas" lost their cred. A sell out for sure. Couldn't take Bud and Lou seriously after this one.

Nor have I ever eaten Frankenberry cereal.

I wonder what's the template for this Frankenstein. KInd of more DeNiro than Lagosi.
