How do you fall asleep?

Postby Jimbo » 03 Sep 2018, 14:12

Last night I tried a meditation hack I read about and that was to concentrate on the points where my body met the mattress thereby excluding other thoughts that might keep me awake. And I did pretty well. I felt my cheek on the pillow and then the edge of my shoulder and the rest my left side on the sheet. I was feeling relaxed and thought just for a second how this may be the trick I needed for getting to sleep when I got an itch. Then another itch and that was that. I was awake and itching all over. A half hour of Joe Rogan later I guess I fell asleep.

What's your sleeping secret?

smoke bongs all day, settle down to watch a BBC4 documentary, wake up on the sofa two hours or so later, bumble out to empty the dog, check out the contents of the fridge, wash up (sometimes), watch the rest of the prog you fell asleep in, and maybe another, then go to bed around two. Works for me every time.

I fall gently to sleep, consumed by thoughts of existential dread.

Infrequently. I probably only get 4 or 5 hours on a really good night, and even then I have to be pretty tired, read a book for a while, and use ear-plugs to actually drop off.

Work hard during the day. Doesn't that long to fall asleep.

I choose insomnia over that terrible plan.

My problem is how just lying there is boring. Even if it takes ten minutes to fall asleep that's ten whole minutes of doing nothing. By seven minutes I'm out of bed and back here looking up conspiracies. That's a lot more interesting.

I only have trouble sleeping when there's a lot on my mind. I discovered that reading and watching t.v. are good ways of falling asleep but I'm too lazy to get up and get a book or turn on the T.V. So, I just hold my eyes open as long as I can without blinking then rest my eyes. I rarely need to do this more than a few times but I've noticed I have "busy dreams" when I do this so maybe I'm STILL thinking too much.

Although on Fridays I'm usually so knackered I just nod off on the sofa with a glass of sherry in front of Gardeners' World.
